Discussion: Schumer: Senate Democrats Will Vote To Reopen Government

I’m not mad. Strategically, it does remove the ability of the GOP to couple DACA with CHIP and make it a choice of, as they say illegals and children. DACA kids, mind you, were not illegal until Trump made them so. So, now we have a pure immigration debate. Nobody is for illegal immigration. The Democrats need to make that very clear. Is the system we have in place unfair? Yes. However, that isn’t going to change with one vote. The Democrats CANNOT put themselves in a position of being tainted as the party that supports illegals who murder. There are too many ignorant people out there who can’t see that type of attack for what it is.

So sad, but absolutely accurate.

For all we know there is one living in the White House. An immigrant who lied on her paperwork and did not go legally through the process. Show us your papers Mel.

Unfortunately, the Democrats can’t choose who they have to deal with or when those deals can be made. So, you fight the fights at the best time for fighting, and that means first boxing the Republicans in as much as possible. CHIP is done, and there is still a path forward for DACA. And, as far as I can tell, there’s no “wall” money. As soon as Trump rescinded DACA, we knew it would not be easy to get protection for the DREAMers. Would it have been great to get Trump and the Republicans to cave today? Of course. But, that wasn’t going to happen.

Oh the irony that the GOP is stuck to a rule named after a child rapist.

and, even if McConnell honors his “intentions” and some kind of reasonable immigration bill should pass both houses, the Republicans know that Trump can veto it. I am feeling very uneasy about this but will hope that those of you who are more optimistic than I am are correct. Otherwise, Dems will appear to have sold out the Dreamers and could lose a huge voting block.

I so wish that more pundit-voices on the Left would hammer on this point. That and the fact that Repukes control the WH, Senate and House, these points get muddied up all to often. My two cents.

This “sold out” language is (not to single you out) horse crap - the 2016 elections (with all their warts) sold out DACA to the tune of 63 million to 66. The Democrats didn’t trade them away, because the Democrats had and have no power to control what happens to them. The Democrats stopped holding the nation’s breath, which is very nearly the only thing they have the power to do.

I seem to be in the minority on Twitter in thinking Schumer didn’t get rolled as hard as everyone is saying. CHIP is getting funded for 6 years, so that takes one of the Republicans’ hostages off the table. If McConnell is lying, which is by far the most likely scenario, then we’re back in the same situation in 3 weeks, but without Republicans being able to play CHIP against DACA, plus they were outright lying (we already knew that, but it’s harder for Republicans to spin).

I know people want a better deal but to do that you need a majority.

“The Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement. We will vote today to reopen the government,” Schumer said on the Senate floor early Monday afternoon. “The Republican majority now has 17 days to prevent the DREAMers from being deported.”

How is the lapse of CHIP a Democrats’ fault? They always asked for a clean CHIP bill and they can’t force the bill to the floor.

I’ve identified your problem. Screaming about bad things is always more fashionable than nuanced semi-positive arguments. Twitter is a pox on reasoned discourse.

(in contrast to the TPM comment section, where discussions are always respectful and productive :stuck_out_tongue: )

But what are would they be stopping it for? They got their vote, just they lost. Then it sounds like sour grapes from the loser. Blaming it on the refs or a bad bounce of the ball. What kind of standing does that leave you with?

Sure, come November it might mean something, but in the meantime, if the Dems shut down the Government on Feb 8, who will get the blame, and accurately so?

This is the first dump of oil on the Blue Wave, how much will it take to flatten out that wave to insignificance?

The “Dems got nothing” trolls are popping up right and left and in the middle, I’m curious if they are Russian trolls… If they really ARE Dreamer defenders, they sure seem bent on self-immolation.

Sorry, rmwarnick, but unless you disambiguate your comment, to me you sound just like the Russian-paid trolls wo appeared on my FB page during the election. Knee-jerk, automatic “its my party and I’ll bitch if I want to” bullshit.

I am inured. No amount of pleading will convince there’s still any argument from that side that is valid.

I just don’t believe “The Left” is as stupid as these trolls try to make us sound. They are fakes.

It may, in fact, be “horse crap” to claim that the Dems gave up on the Dreamers, but Republicans are unfortunately very good at selling dishonest messages. Edited to reflect jepo07’s comment: I’m not a troll, just a very proud but very worried liberal. If I can’t express my honest thoughts here, I don’t know where to take them.

doing that would make it into a 2018 campaign issue.

If there is ever an agreement for wall money from the Democrats (and I hope there never is) it needs to be made only with the agreement that republicans, including Trump, explain to the American people why we are being made to pay for something that Trump himself said over and over and over Mexico would pay for. Why this isn’t front and center is beyond me. Using a person’s own words against them is a pretty good strategy and with Trump we have a treasure chest full.

Cue Trump spiking the ball in the end zone and doing a victory dance, taunting the assembled crowd. He’ll never be able to resist.
