For Schumer to say this at this point is sure to have the wingers howling. Chuck’s mind is made up. Gorsuch’s hearings are going to be a nightmare for him as the Senate Dems pick him apart piece by piece. He’ll still get confirmed eventually, but, I hope, damaged enough, like DeVos, to be irrevocably tainted.
Go, Chuck. He is setting the stage to being opposed to Gorsuch on policy and substance, not just spite (but revenge is so sweet). Can’t wait to hear the epic kvetching from the Emperor Hypocrite, McConnell. Chuck even voted against Hypocrite’s wife for Secretary of Transportation!
Unfortunately, they know no shame nor taint, witness Exhibit A, Clarence Thomas. AND his Tea Party wife. Remember that grinning People Magazine cover? I sure do.
I agree, but, if nothing else the record must be established for history and the historians.
When Gorsuch is confirmed he will forever wear the illegitimate jacket, a stigma that won’t go away in his lifetime. His legacy is already written.
ETA: I’m hoping for a 52-48 vote.
@carolson I’m still hoping RV enthusiasts Thomas and Alito will meet up out on that glorious open road — head-on at 70 mph.
Can’t believe the dems are even considering Gorsuch. Garland should be the only acceptable nominee to them. This bunch are really, really bad at politics.
The Dems are not considering him. Where did you get that idea from? Not from this article.
Send them both hunting with Dick Cheney.
yes. this article explains they’ve met with him, asked his views on tough topics etc. That all gives the idea they’re considering him. Eg what if he’d given them all the answers they wanted?
They shouldn’t even be going through the motions. It only weakens the principle.
Now that we see how absolutely corrupt the Republican senators (except 2) are, demand answers, demand that he answer everything and don’t let him and these corrupt Republican senators get away with anything any more.
The DeVos vote showed how the Republican senators were paid off to vote for her. She is absolutely unfit, incompetent, and “flunked” her hearing. The Republican senators saw all this and know that she is unfit, yet they voted for her. How much were they paid by Betsy and her family? How much?
This is Garland’s seat and the Democratic senators better make that very clear and do whatever to slow down and block this candidate. There have been 8 on the bench, keep it 8 !
even if he did answer the “tough questions”. 100% chance he was gonna lie anyway.
Maybe even plagiarize, that is allowed and acceptable with this moronic gop of taxpayer welfare queens who are sucking the country dry of ethics, morals, world status and anything good for the American public.
Going to be a long 2 years for starters
You don’t understand our system. It’s standard pro forma stuff, signifying nothing.
Gorsuch’s permanent asterisk is going to be almost as big and shiny as The Donald’s! (At least the GOP didn’t have to blatantly change the rules to get Trump elected, for all that they’ve been gerrymandering and voter ID-ing the entire nation for decades now.)
He’s an “originalist” as long as it supports the current Republican agenda, otherwise he’ll be happy to “legislate from the bench.” IOW Gorsuch is a political hack.
I don’t care if he is Cardozo or Holmes. I could not care less what his qualifications may be when not a single one of them can turn him into Merrick Garland.
If the Dems were in control of the Senate–and let’s not get into why they don’t because it still drives me nuts–you could rightly insist that they treat Trump’s nominee as the R Senate treated Obama’s–ie ignore the nomination. Unfortunately, that isn’t an option. D Senators have to choose between boycotting the process or filibustering Gorsuch. Looks like they’re doing the latter. They’d better be.
When they filibuster, they can say (1) he isn’t Garland; (2) if he’d been like Garland maybe they would not have filibustered, but in fact he’s an extremist Republican. They can also say that they are participating in the process for merely prudential reasons, the nomination has no legitimacy, the Supreme Court seat has been stolen from Obama, constitutional democracy is no longer a reality in the USA–all which would be true, and which I certainly hope some of them will have the balls to say.
Agreed. But it the Rs want to confirm this illegitimate judge, they should force the Rs to end the filibuster. I will be pretty upset if the Rs somehow get 60 votes on any judge to occupy Garland’s stolen seat.
I agree with you, except point (2) seems totally unnecessary (and complicated in that as far as I can gather he isn’t particularly extremist as far as repubs go).
But if they were going to say those things, why aren’t they doing so now?
And the record from this day forward should be:
EVERY Democratic reference to Gorsuch - EVERY ONE - should contain the phrase “nominated to a seat that was stolen.”
And at his hearing, EVERY question to him - EVERY ONE - should begin with “Judge, you are being nominated to a seat that was stolen”
