I have a feeling the Kavanaugh nomination will die. I’m not sure of it, but it does appear moribund at this point.
The report is that Cohen has information regarding Russian conspiracy. If he does and it can be proven does that mean that the Trump presidency is illegal? And does it also mean that Pence is in office illegally? Can any of the actions taken by Trump be revoked because they were not done by a legal president?
Does the constitution cover such eventualities?
Sen.s Hirono and Markey have just announced that they are cancelling their meetings with Brett Kavanaugh, apparently indefinitely.
Nice try, but fat chance, Chuck. Remember it’s the GOP Crime Family you’re dealing with…
For the GOP, the constitution stops at the 2nd Amendment, so no…
I don’t blame Schumer, he doesn’t have a great hand to play, but the GOP would be insane to not push this nomination through. I don’t see any reason why they’d agree. Judicial appointments are the SINGLE win they can go back to their base with come November. The 1% Relief Act, I mean tax cuts, are already polling worse than Trump.
I think the position every Democrat should take is that because of the campaign finance violations, and potentially because of the Russian interference (assessment of which waits on Mueller’s report), there is a real question as to whether Trump was legitimately elected. Everything he touched, from the tax legislation he signed to the Executive Orders, to the rollbacks of Obama’s policies to the revocation of Brennan’s security clearance, should be held in abeyance. Everything. And if he is found to have been elected as the result of his own crimes, the all of it should be null and void and a new election held. The Constitution envisioned the president’s incapacity or his impeachment, but not an illegitimate president. That’s the crisis we face, and we have Trump to thank for it. Let’s reward him justly.
Not going to happy unless that headlines reads:
“Schumer Asks Committee to Delay Kananaugh Hearing Over Impeachment Proceedings”
Yeah, not right now.
We have to wait for a new Congress.
GOP Playbook (Abridged Version):
-
Trump (934 indictments; 13,726 guilty pleas; 128,917 felony convictions): Yawn.
-
Obama (Dijon mustard on a burger): “Mass hysteria, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together!”
O/T Here we go again
Don’t forget he wore a brown suit…
Our constitution does not consider these contingencies. There is no do over clause. Cheaters do prosper in the sense that, if Trump were impeached and removed, we’d be dealing with President Pence, who was part of the scam. The only solution is at the ballot box, and to tell you the truth, I have some, but not a lot of faith in that approach since gerrymandering and other forms of voter suppression are still an issue, the MSM appears incapable of consistent objectivity, the electoral college is an anachronism, and conservative, rural states have way too much power. That’s how these two blatherskites were put in office in the first place.
And it can happen again. Visualize a ‘President Tom Cotton.’ God help us all.
In other words, barring some kind of ‘mass enlightenment’’ on the part of conservative voters, we progressives are still at a disadvantage.
There are two more weeks before the Kavanaugh hearings start.
Considering where we have come in the last two weeks, that is an eternity.
And Donnie is not going to be winning any news cycles between now and then.
Kavanaugh is polling around the levels of Harriet Miers and Robert Bork, neither of them made it to the high court.
And he is a cockroach who is not going to look better as the lights get turned on him. The fact that Grassley is hiding documents by making them ‘committee only’ has not become common knowledge.
So, I am guessing that there is at least a 50% chance that the Kavanaugh nomination eventually has to be withdrawn or face defeat.
I’m certain that your esteemed colleagues across the aisle will join you in seeking to ensure the Supreme Court is kept as an august body, free from partisanship.
HAH!!! Just kidding!
The fact that Trump and others on his behalf committed multiple crimes in order for him to win the presidency and become an illegitimate president should be enough to delay the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings …
and require an undoing and reversal of everything he’s done since 01/20/2017 - including Gorsuch.
No, no, no, and no.
(Sorry.)
I will settle for a weakened lame duck Donald who has to deal with a Democratically controlled House and Senate that has subpoena powers for two years. Especially if they start exercising the power of the purse-strings and hamstring his ability to hold rallies.
That’s one fantasy.
What Mitch McConnell did was unconscionable and I really don’t think he ought to get away with it. It’s a disgusting precedent - stealing a SCOTUS pick from a sitting president.
