Discussion: Sanders Goes Off On Twitter: You Can't Be A Moderate And A Progressive

Discussion for article #245498

Moderately progressive?

As someone who has “socialist” as part of his political label, Bernie might not want to focus too much on the technical meaning of those labels.

Progressively moderate is more accurate.

True, especially someone who has been all over the place on the extremely important progressive ssue of gun reform.

She was for Keystone?

No, she was not for it. She spent some time developing her views, and the declared she was against it. (I guess one should give immediate opinions on any and every issue, and not spend time cogitating and studying what’s involved?)

I’m a flaming liberal on some issues. I’m fairly moderate on some others. And I’m in between on yet other issues. Bernie’s got a problem with this?

Most progressives aren’t for giving gun manufacturers immunity from lawsuits from day one. (see everyone can play this game)

Before she was against it. Or not. Nothing matters anymore but gut feelings and zingers anyway. Welcome to the 2016 Presidential Election, the election where Twitter reigns supreme and the typical voter has all the political awareness of a gnat.

An emotionally challenged gnat that is.

“Well, there hasn’t been a final decision made. (Crosstalk) Probably not. And we – but we haven’t finished all of the analysis. So as I say, we’ve not yet signed off on it. But we are inclined to do so, and we are for several reasons – going back to one of your original questions – we’re either going to be dependent on dirty oil from the Gulf or dirty oil from Canada. And until we can get our act together as a country and figure out that clean, renewable energy is in both our economic interests and the interests of our planet – (applause) – I mean, I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone how deeply disappointed the president and I are about our inability to get the kind of legislation through the Senate that the United States was seeking.”

I´m not sure what this means, exactly, and she was speaking at the time as SoS.

But she sure as hell did vote for the war.

I don’t we should let Bernie define us Democrats. He hasn’t been one for years.

Well, yeah. But having been through several of ´em it´s not like they are ever any series of pithy policy debates.

Although I really thought Lincoln and Douglas were entertaining.

Right. We know.

Bernie doesn’t get to define progressive for us Democrats!

Hillary has a glass jaw! I’m sick of her whining!

I think Bernie’s got problems with her claiming to be progressive.

She really is a solid moderate, with a lot of credibility that way. And she’s a reasonably good advocate for women and children in some ways… except when she needs to compromise in order to protect corporate interests. (As an example: single payer would primarily benefit women and children and minorities.) She is not, however, a progressive.

And I think part of his thinking is that it’s important to define shades of grey when it comes to liberals, as well as conservatives, in order to help prevent conservatives from being believed when they claim that (for instance) someone who is moderately right of center is a communist. And it will be useful in the future for there to be a sort of hive-mind definition for “progressive” so that, when that term is used, people know what it means in terms of what someone is advocating for.

Which, rounding back to Hillary, implies that he’s angry because she’s trying to dilute and fuzz the definition of “progressive” to edge herself under the umbrella, or at least pretend that’s where she’s standing.

He’s not. He’s defining “progressive” versus “moderate”, which are labels showing where someone is on the political spectrum, not which party they belong to. Huge difference.

Nobody else has the right to think. They should listen to Dear Leader and follow suit immediately. Fuck you Sanders.

No, no, not at all. I’m just reading along and pipeline, pipeline, pipeline, WAR!

I’m just saying there are other parts of her platform we can harangue each other about other than her war vote. We know how that turned out and we’ve all gotten into it ad nauseum.
