Discussion: Sanders Goes Off On Twitter: You Can't Be A Moderate And A Progressive

What are you talking about berns?

I am very progressive on most issues, kind of moderate on others. Most people are you know. Adults have opinions!

It is not ALL or Nothing!!

Well, until this race, maybe. Now she’s progressing moderately. Or something like that.

His whining just doesn’t stop. I just heard a clip on Hillary’s support of DOMA … what vote did she have back in the mid-90s???

I was a Bernie fan (not enough to vote for him in a primary), but I liked his message … now, not so much.

I find this unsettling, because she completely missed the point. Keystone wouldn’t have provided any oil to the U.S., dirty or otherwise.

Opposing Keystone should have been an easy decision. You didn’t have to worry about whether the oil was dirty or not. The bottom line was that Keystone would have provided only a handful of permanent U.S. jobs, would not have increased energy supplies in the U.S., and would have carried the risk of polluting an aquifer that’s relied upon by millions of people for drinking water and irrigation. All negatives, with virtually no positives. So how was this a tough decision?

“It’s a personal attack, to question Hillary Clinton’s commitment to progressive values”

Yeah it’s now a personal attack to characterize past positions as fitting or not fitting into a particular political spectrum. How dare anyone question or judge her on her political positions?!

So, will there be room for moderates under the progressive tent? Or should we just tell the Sanders’ campaign to fuck off if it needs our money and votes?

The Republicans control the House and then Senate. With the presidency they will control the legislative process and foreign policy/national security. The far left has decided to go all in for this election at a time when the Democratic party is in a very weak position. This all in bet is a truly breathtaking gamble.

And for what — a “democratic socialist” who until less than a year ago, often referred to himself as simply a socialist with pride in his voice. I have witnessed some of these interviews. There are many videos of Senator Sanders with these socialist self-referrals, and, make no mistake, the Republicans have them. He will be destroyed with them as they are played over and over and over. The nation, the entire nation (as opposed to Democratic primary voters), has no stomach for socialism.

Senator Sanders will be soundly defeated, and the extreme right will seize enormous power. The Democratic Party must not make the all in bet that the far left is pushing.

Someone refresh my memory - was it Christopher Hitchens who used to refer to them as, “the pwogwessives?”

“You can be a moderate. You can be a progressive. But you cannot be a moderate and a progressive.”

Oh Yeah!?!?! Well, you cannot become POTUS if you split the Dem base and cause a significant portion of those supporting the candidate that lost the primary to refuse to show up in November to vote for the candidate who won the nomination.

Bernie’s lofty ideals have devolved fairly quickly—and fairly predictably—into personal attacks against Hillary.

I’ve always liked Bernie as a Senator, but the more I listen to him now, the less I like him.
And so many of his most ardent followers behave like deranged cult members—attacking those who disagree with them like a bunch of Scientologists defending their “faith.”

Last time I checked, people can be more than one thing at a time.

Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon further defended the former secretary of state during a CNN interview. “It’s a personal attack, to question Hillary Clinton’s commitment to progressive values…”

So where a candidate stands ideologically is now a personal attack? OK, so that’s out. And since issue positions reflect ideology, those are out. Seems like we’re going to be running out of stuff to talk about. But I guess since despicable racially-charged smears like “black lives don’t matter to Bernie” are still fair game, we’ll at least have that elevated level of discussion to fall back on.

That being said, both Hillary and Bernie are playing word-games here, Hillary trying to embrace one label over the other, depending on who she’s talking to and when, and Bernie pretending they are necessarily completely discrete categories, with no overlap, no continuum where people could fall along points in between. Pretty much your basic “jockeying for position.”

By the way, perfect choice of stock photo footage for the “goes off on” click-bait headline.

Probably not a good move for Bernie. Registered Dems will turn against him for this type of labeling exercise. Registered Dems know who the Clintons are. They try to achieve progressive goals and make some deals along the way to get there because they believe in working within the system to deliver as much progress as the political system will allow. Bernie isn’t a purist progressive on a lot of issues either.

That depends on how much political influence you have. Hillary Clinton has a lot of political influence; thus the criticism. You can’t row forward and sideways at the same time.

You win the thread.

You just knew that eventually, Sanders would call on the purity police. Protect the purity of the essential bodily fluids, Bernie – only you can protect us. And get those pragmatists off your lawn!

Yeah, Bernie… and you can’t accomplish 3/4 of the stuff you are shouting about…
