I think almost everyone in the media missed the real problem, and maybe what Rep Ilhan was talking about.
The way that evangelicals in congress turn Israel into the 51st state. That’s the real problem.
I’m sure the Evangelicals did that because they have dual loyalties. / snark
There are two concerns:
1). What is the best policy towards Israel and in the Middle East generally which has far greater problems than Israel/Palestine?
2). How to combat the nasty underlying thread of anti-Semitism which exists in our society in much the way racism existed in dog whistles prior to Trump bringing in the fog horn.
Without the underlying willingness to think ill of Jews the trope of dual loyalties would have rung alarm bells of bigotry in the same way Trump’s claim that the ‘Mexican’ judge could not treat him fairly.
This whole issue is a red heifer… herring? Not sure;)
You must be thinking of Sarah. Herring it is.
Am I the only one who remembers how Netanyahu denigrated Obama publicly in a speech to the American Congress that was loudly cheered by Republicans? Did I dream that?
Once again, a really complicated and nuanced issue is being reduced to its stupidest components and debated using false and insincere accusations that obscure all intelligent opinion and remove the ability to actually make legitimate criticism.
Not a student of religion here. Find the entire concept baffling. But certain citizens in this nation adhere to religions causing loyalties and allegiances to places and concepts separate from the loyalties and allegiances they may hold to the United States. I don’t view that as bad, but it seems anyone pointing it out is vilified. Muslims are supposed to make at least one trek to Mecca in their life. Must. Whereas I don’t feel compelled to check anywhere off a “Must Do/Visit/Experience” list related to religion. Jews have an affinity and bond with Jerusalem that’s probably stronger than any ties to a city or locale (or loyalty?) in the United States. Me, I could give a damn. But do those making the same observations deserve scorn for doing so? Observe an American Jew feels a very strong bond and loyalty to Israel and all hell breaks loose.
She’s a smocky heifer—not red enough to bring Jesus back, and not read enough to be discussing any issue in public except pork rind and squirrel recipes.
pork rind and squirrel recipes.
Your killing me! Reminds me of this photo.
Suggest you read history.
Oy vey Maria.
(From a play I once did. The whole line was “My father was Irish Catholic and my mother was Russian Orthodox Jew. Between the Knights of Columbus and the Hadassah meetings, oy vey Maria, were we kids confused.”)
Parts of the Saudi government are known sponsors of radical Islamic terrorism.
“Muslims are terrorists!” is an Islamophobic “trope”.
Do the Saudis get a free pass because of the existence of that “trope”? Is it still a “trope” if it’s true?
Is she still the campaign’s spokesperson? She shouldn’t be. She is not only clumsy in her posting, but ignorant of important parts of history…
If citizens in this nation need to fear a specific demographic above all others, in terms of their lives and exposure to harm, it’s white males between the ages of about 15 and 30 that should keep us all up at night, sitting in a rocker a few feet from the front door, gun in our lap.
You are certainly right. Catholics have a bond to Rome. Episcopalians, Anglicans in disguise, have a loyalty to Britain, perhaps even to the crown. Lutherans have an abiding affinity for Germany, Presbyterians for Scotland. And let’s not get started on Irish-Americans!
Great line!
It fits many circumstances.
