Trump: It’s a coup!
Seriously, it’s a good time for one.

I am not holding my breath for the Repukes to do the right thing although this involves money and they might be getting worried about their donors. As always, it comes down to them putting money above all else but they will have to get enough votes in the House and Senate to override a veto so it will probably not happen.

They are likely more concerned with the tariffs tanking the economy in 2020 than doing the right thing.

Well, it may be a vestigial spine, but there’s still hope.

(Not much, I realize, but I remain the eternal optimist…)

OT: Today’s laugh is Camilla winking at someone behind Spankee’s back yesterday, where, apparently, Spankee and Melanoma were scheduled for exactly 15 mins for tea before being hustled out so the fumigators could come in.

Do note that Melanoma doesn’t understand that you actually do remove your hat when you come inside (didn’t she ever watch Downton Abbey???).

Republicans are concerned!

But GOP lawmakers are growing anxious. “We have a lot of members who are very concerned, I think, about where this is headed,” said Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.). Thune added that if the tariff standoff continues, “Congress is going to want to probably be heard from” in terms of trying to limit Trump’s tariff authority.

Congress is going to want to probably be heard from?!! Them’s fightin’ words! :smirk:

“no one seems exactly sure of the specifics of what he wants”

What he wants is symbolical racism to help win votes in 2020.

The nice thing about the representative system of government we set up is that it’s designed to not require a quorum of notably virtuous people. If they’re worried about saving their skins via saving the common man, then that gets us halfway there.

(I will note with a considerable degree of semi-hopeless disgust that the founders did not appear to contemplate a quorum of actively malicious representatives, a line against which we’ve regularly toed since Newt Gingrich decided his caucus should not even pretend to govern in good faith)

“…he’d have to find a way out of his strong-arming while still saving some face.”

All he has to do is have some government agency whip up a report claiming to show illegal border entries are down 20% since he publicly issue the tariff threat. Done. Easy. Hell, just tweet the claim without any foundation or facts to back it, it's how he does everything else the GOP fails to push back on.

My guess is that you are correct, particularly if it looks like he will lose the support of the Senate. He doesn’t like fights that directly involve him and a veto override would be more than he could handle.

Democrats need to get something for going along.

“Congressional Republicans are discussing holding a vote to block the tariffs, which would be a significant smack in the face to a President…”

Trump will have to observe it's unlikely the courts will permit such a vote to happen.

If by “the economy” you are referring to their donors’ bank accounts, I agree.

It will be a battle of greed vs. racism – keep tuned, no one knows where this will go.

I’ll MapQuest it and get back with everyone.

Just for accuracy’s sake, what we are witnessing isn’t ratcheting up defiance so much as a (likely temporary) outbreak of sanity among the Guardians of Predators. This too shall pass.
