Or, in my daughterâs case, to add up her ridiculous debt. She got a full scholarship but will emerge with over 50K in living expenses. Ah, yes, saddling our future generations with crippling debt and no health insurance. Priceless.

More a matter of a culture built around available resources and unrealistic productivity expectations, I suspect. American outlets donât actually spend the money to do reporting anymore, downsize their news staffs like crazy and thereby create a âits faster and cheaper to sit on your ass and Google than reportâ culture. BBC News is a real, old school, well-funded news gathering organization, like our networks and major newspapers used to be.

Holy cheese! I was in a Lyft heading south on 101 from SFO* when police were responding. Didnât know why, of course, but we passed a f-ton of police cars northbound, lights ablazinâ. Two, three, or four at a time; marked & unmarked alike. Iâve never seen so many active cars. What is happening? Smartphone says there is an active shooter at YouTube.
My Lyft driver responded âwell YouTube has been unreasonably shutting down legitimate gun safety and information channels, so likely one of those folks needed to show them their error; gun owners have a legitimate grievance.â I did press the point that, even so, it is not OK to go shooting up a workplace. He very very reluctantly agreed to that.

Just a few miles down Highway 101 from where I live. We heard it on KCBS
The three victims were rushed to San Francisco General Hospital â two women and a man. The women, 32 and 27, were in serious condition and the man, 36, was in critical. Authorities said they believe the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot at the YouTube headquarters at 901 Cherry Avenue.

So, ready to speculate now. Iâm guessing workplace or office romance beef and a pistol, which the gun-fondlers will be gleefully pointing out as proof of . . . some damn idiot thing or other very soon.
I just canât get my head into the kind of rage that makes a person actually follow through on a crazy âIâll kill them and then shoot myselfâ notion. At my absolute most young testosterone-addled man in a bad breakup lunatic craziest, an idea like that was at most a two seconds at the brink of the abyss fantasy. To actually do it, make the plan, make the preparations and follow it all the way through? I mean, even having stood at the edge and briefly down into the abyss of irrational violence fantasy, I just canât grasp it.
Edited to add: but then again, when I was at my absolute most testosterone-addled young man-boy in a bad breakup lunatic craziest, I didnât have a gun handy, now, did I? How much easier is it when youâre in that kind of state to just go off and do it when youâve got a semi-automatic weapon in the glovebox or in your purse or on your belt, or just sitting at home in a drawer or a gun safe?

Iâve always recommended that to these shooters after the fact. If youâre that upset and youâre going to shoot yourself anyway, kill yourself first. I mean, be rational about it.

San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said they were still investigating the incident, but they found a woman dead with a âself-inflictedâ wound that they "believe is the shooter. He added that four others had been wounded and had been sent to the hospital.
âWe have four victims who have all been transported for gunshot related injuries,â Barberini said. âWe have one suspect who is deceased inside the building with a self-inflicted wound that at this time we believe to be the shooter.â
They never have their listening ears on at that point, do they?
