Call me crazy, but I am going to point my finger at budget cuts - or more specifically budget cuts to local beat reporting because “profitability”. IIRC, the Beeb is not as beholden to shareholder value.

The Beeb is a quasi-governmental entity funded by license fees paid by television and radio purchasers under an Act of Parliament mandating that they be informative and impartial and more or less enlightened and enlightening. On their side of the pond, anyway.

… side note about this dude…
My fault for chatting w/ the guy, I guess. We were actually having an enjoyable chat, although even that was him railing against the police enforcing speed limits against him (“I know my vehicle; he is just jealous that I’m a better driver”). His Lyft profile said he was an avid gamer, so I asked about that (I am a bay area nerd girl). Of course, he is into the tactical & 1st person shooter games! We were then having a nice conversation about his music, that I also liked (70s). Then The Who came on w/ “tip my hat to a new constitution” and he started talking about how soon we would really have one. One that would get rid of government overreach & those terrible Social Justice Warriors. I just nodded.
Sad, because some of these guys I could almost like. If they weren’t such gamergate, entitled, racist, misogynistic, self-centered, faux-victimized, white dudes.
And I mean that sincerely!
