The best way to show that you are not a moron is to start saying and doing things that are smart. After a while and with some discipline and effort, people wil start to say, “You know what, he’s really not a moron after all.”
Sadly, discipline and effort are not Trump’s strong suits, so he will prove he’s not a moron by attempting to beat up some lesser nation like Iran or NoKo, thereby proving his manly moronosity to his molemen followers. The calm before the unspeakable.

Trump is having a Fredo moment now (Godfather II). If I didn’t feel like he would renege on the Iran deal, blow up North Korea, leave NATO and fire McMaster and Mattis just to spite T-Rex, this episode would be positively Mooch-like.

Pence pretending to be “livid” about Tillerson remarks after leaking Tillerson remarks. Strange times.
He can fire (or force out/who are we kidding here) whoever, because he’s the ‘head cheese’ and that’s not going to change anytime soon.
However, whether that person is Mattis or Tillerson, he’s likely aware that the wrong firing could stir up a hornet’s nest and that’s something that could (again a hedge) be a major headache during the remainder of this year and in '18.
