Discussion: Report: Paul Ryan Open To Speakership, But Not Bargaining With Hardliners

Discussion for article #241888

So basically he is saying that unless he doesn’t have to do the kind of negotiating necessary to be Speaker of the House he is not going to do the job off being Speaker?

I read it differently. He is not going to pre-agree to their positions as a condition of getting their support for his speakership.

Basically, he hasn’t said one thing. An “anonymous” source is giving the MSM something to bat around for a bit longer.

It would seem the real question is will Ryan work with with Democrats to actually accomplish something without caving to the Freedomless Caucas?

Obvously, no one loves the horse-trading and deal-cutting and arm twisting of speakerhood they way PR does. Dude was born for this.

They are so hosed.

We shall see. Maybe he and Joe Biden can have a joint press conference announcing their decisions so we can all get back to business and not be on pins and needles waiting with bated breath for their decisions.

Yeah. I don’t think you’re going to get sign-off on that one.
Those Merlot & Honey Days are long gone Paulie.

Paul Ryan seems like the last guy capable of strong arming the Freedom Caucus at the moment of their greatest accomplishments. I’m expected to believe Eddie Munster has the fortitude, savvy, and gravitas to de-escalate a mob with pitchforks and torches hellbent on burning down the government? Seriously?

This guy?

Now the Freedumb Caucus has taken the Speakership hostage. Don’t negotiate with terrorists, Paul.

Note: It’s ironic that they’ve created this problem by strict adherence to the Hastert Rule just as Denny Hastert is negotiating prison time.

My take is that Ryan is telling the Freedom Caucus in advance, “I’m NOT the guy you want!”, thus sparing himself the ignominy of failing in the post, and making himself sound decent, and strong while weaseling out of the snare.

To which Boehner and McCarthy both replied, well, yeah, I am open to the Speakership too if I don’t have to bargin with “hardliners.”

Seriously, isn’t that the key point, many of the GOP want the speakership but don’t want to be strangled by the pre-conditions with the Freedom Caucus?

Actually, one of the demands…the process demand…that the Freedom Caucus wants, flies directing in the face of the Hastert Rule. They want each and every bill that any of them submit, to be put to the floor for vote, regardless of having the necessary votes from the broader GOP caucus.

The Hasert Rule is to only put legislation forward that can pass with only GOP votes.

Let me understand this: Paul Ryan aided and abetted the creation of the RWNJ’s, their positions, their stridency, and their pledge to not compromise. Now he wants terms from them?? It’s bull shit.

I don’t think Ryan actually wants to be Speaker. Its not in his wheel house, he would much rather crunch and make up numbers in the Ways and Means committee.

And the pre-conditions of the Freedom Caucus are dangerously insane. Shutdowns and no debt limit raise unless Obamacare, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are all repealed. No ifs, ands or buts.

Besides being so many degrees beyond toxic from an electoral standpoint, such a stance is a clear indication that they have no use for democracy. They know they cannot actually win enough votes to move forward such an agenda, and they don’t care. They intend, to use their favorite phrase, force it down America’s throat anyway.

No, the “kind of negotiating necessary to be Speaker of the House” is usually done with the other party.
