Discussion: Rand Paul: Vaccines Can Cause 'Profound Mental Disorders'

This is a very bad moment for the health of our society. When we have fairly mainstream leaders of the GOP spreading this pollution into our health system discourse, we are all in danger. Our “balanced media coverage” syndrome, where there’s always two sides to every argument and facts and science are totally debatable, is part of this problem.

Paul is a nutcase who probably believes this bunk. Christie probably was just caught in a moment where he wanted to pander to the ultra-conservative base, and had no policy idea in actuality. He just said something where he thought he could score some points and hedge at the same time. But instead he showed how few convictions he has.

Somehow, these anti-science, anti-government lies have gotten a foothold. We need strong statements from leaders on all sides as to why vaccines work and why everyone must be vaccinated. We need LEADERSHIP. People hear this crap and then they think they have an out. We may lose the herd immunity threshold if this continues.

His office later put out a statement regarding how “most” medical decisions should be left to a person and their doctor. Past statements suggest this doesn’t include abortion.

Oh, I so very much hope so. My concern is the damage that is being inflicted on lots of people who have nothing to do with this nutbaggery.

“I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines,” Paul said.

I thank God every day this man was not my eye doctor.

He’s a Republican. By definition, responsible for NOTHING!

Ah, there’s your problem!
He’s not living in the 21st century.
He’s longing for the 20th (I’m being generous)

Well, you can’t fault him for saying this. How is he to know otherwise? It’s not like [Dr.] Rand Paul [M.D.] is a medical professional who has any expertise in medicine or anything. I mean if he, say, had a degree in medicine and then worked as a general surgeon before specializing in eye surgery for several years, well then --sure-- what he said would be crazy.

I wonder if we’ll see a spike in flu deaths among the elderly after Fox News weighs in with their fair and balanced approach.

Rand Paul saying things can cause profound mental disorders.

To Rand Paul and his ilk, scientists are “only in it for the money.”

I will blame the media for most of the mainstreaming of magical thinking, with cable news “he said/she said” reporting. “One scientist says the moon is rock, and this man says it’s made of green cheese. Looks like a new controversy!! But who is right?”

I can only hope that more people jump on the “I have heard” approach to science. For example: “I have heard that Rand Paul is a moron.”
