I’m more concerned about where we’re headed as a country than I ever have been and I point the finger squarely at media outlets operating under the principle that as long as it’s pointed out that “some people disagree”, adequate coverage has been provided.
As Paul Krugman pointed out some time ago, when you have one side maintaining that the earth is flat and the media reporting that “Some people disagree that the earth is flat”, you have a major fcking problem.

In Libertariania, government mandates are replaced by suits for damages. Let the lawsuits begin against parents whose “pure” children transmitted vaccine-available diseases to other people.
Also against school districts who won’t provide separate rooms for vaccinated and unvaccinated children, just to create some pressure on the government to think more about the public-health implications of the vaccine exemptions currently allowed.

Dang, I can’t believe we still have to go through this. The state and the federal government has no practical way to force parents to vaccinate their children. What we can require is that parents vaccinate children who are going to be around other children and other people. So on libertarian grounds, we can see Paul’s statement. But we can require children attending public schools to be vaccinated. There may be other instances. But there is no general requirement, nor would such a thing be suggested, nor could it be carried out. But for schools and like, I don’t know, boy scouts or other activities, it can be and should be. If vaccinations lead to mental disorders, Paul is the only physician I know of who has stated that.

And let us not forget the “D” and the “T” in the DPT vaccine: diptheria (5-10% fatal in children, heart and nerve damage common in survivors) and tetanus (5% mortality in victims under 5 up to 47% mortality in victims over 50).
“Diphtheria epidemic” used be words that struck terror into the hearts of parents. It still kills thousands of people every year in third world countries. Now, it’s not even a word in the vocabulary of the hipster douchenozzle Paultards who think vaccines ought to be a personal decision because they’re only about protecting yourself.

The antivax nutbaggery that has flared up in the wake of the measles outbreak it inevitably created has hammered home to me, in a way the struggle to keep science in the schools and fossil carbon in the ground (or, fuck, at least locked up in polymers) had not, the extent to which our politics have devolved into a struggle against neo-medievalism.
They’re really, truly not going to be satisfied until they’ve dragged us back to the thirteenth century. And instead of H.L. Mencken to scorn them, we have Chuck Todd and Megyn Kelly to give their viewpoint serious and thoughtful consideration, reporting in a balanced way so we can decide.
