Discussion: Rand Paul Clarifies Voter ID Comments: There's 'Nothing Wrong With It'

Discussion for article #222723

I would like to clarify: I support Voter ID when I’m talking to Republicans, but when talking to Independents I think it’s a bad idea.

Soooooooo… The GOP is “offending people”, but Rand Paul says there’s “nothing wrong with it.” Or maybe he just thinks they should keep people (specifically, black/female/young/Democrat-voting people) away from the polls – but do it in a nice way!

Two rules broken here:

  1. If you’re explaining, you’re losing.
  2. If this is your second “clarification” on an issue in 3 days, stop talking about that issue.

Paul must have been spanked badly by his comrades.
Anyway–its all about optics right, Rand? There is nothing wrong
with you pretending to care about African Americans getting disenfranchised
by voter id laws–which you don’t; you just want republicans to look like they
aren’t enjoying it so much–huh?

“…There’s nothing wrong with it…”

Spoken like a true libertarian.

A country, ostensibly run by the people, has a government that numbers, tracks, and taxes individuals from birth. This same government requires everybody to get a document from the government – i.e. permission – in order to vote to oust the government.

What could go wrong? Besides government trying to control the vote, which his party is especially committed to.

I’ve been saying from the gitgo that the Media jumped all over his comments but didn’t listen to him. He didn’t say voter ID was bad he said again “it’s a state issue”. So his theory is the State’s should do all they can for Voter ID but do it quietly. Because he is running for President and wants the minority votes. He knows he can not win without a majority of minority votes. So yes he is for voter ID and whatever the States do to suppress the vote just don’t do it in the Media and do quietly so he can go to Black colleges and Black organizations and say look at me I am for voter rights. He is the worst kind of phony.

That is like Donald Sterling saying nothing wrong with 'blacks" - just don’t be seen with them.

It’s not like anyone in the Rightwing Bubble is going to learn what he said in the Times. That’s the beauty of the Bubble, you can feed the people in it complete lies and they’ll eat it up because [sticks fingers in ears] “LA-LA-LA-LA-LA!”.

Well so much for that whole civil libertarian thingy.

"I’m trying to go out and say to African-Americans ‘I want your vote, and the Republican Party wants your vote’ Of course you do RANDY, we all know that, But why would they vote for a serial panderer like yourself who takes both sides of every issue. You appear to want to out romney, romney. There is zero reason for minorities to vote for you considering you cannot be trusted, You say one thing one day, and then clarify the next. You are a joke.

This little phony want’s to be taken seriously so bad it’s almost painful to watch.

You are correct, but you must remember, Paul doesn’t believe cardinal rules apply to him.

The real point in this piece is how he basically says that all blacks are drug users, and then goes on to say he wants their votes. So that would be another broken rule you could add

  1. Insulting voters isn’t a productive way to encourage them to vote for you.

Paul isn’t going to be swaying the black vote with his visits to Black colleges or Black organizations. Every time he has made such an appearance he has been laughed out of the room

Responding to Hannity, Paul said “Now let me tell you something about the Negro…”

Ah, the old Mitt Romney “what do you want to hear me say?” trick. Convictions tailored to the audience. “These are my principles. If you don’t like them, I have others.”

Say what you will about his father, at least the man had principles and stuck to them - even if a large portion of those principles were nuts. Rand’s principles depend principally on who he’s talking to.

“I’m trying to go out and say to African-Americans ‘I want your vote, and the Republican Party wants your vote’ … we have to be aware that the perception is out there and be careful about not so overdoing something that we further alienate a block of people that we need to attract,” he said.

C’mon Rand. You are a study in overdoing. Hannity, always brings out the best in others.

Oh wait! That would let Black People vote.
Rand is a chip off the old blockhead.
