Discussion for article #237471
Yes. Enough already
This is gonna get ugly…
If you can’t beat em, join em.
Did anyone have problems when clicking the link to this story? It kept sending me to the front page.
The hamster powering the site slipped in its little treadmill.
What’s really sad is that MSNBC spent all day trying to validate the term “transracial” as if its some sort of real-ass thing that wasn’t made up on the fly in the last 48 to 72 hours after this story hit the news. They wasted major effort and time polling on it all damn day to justify that there’s some kind of legitimacy to this ridiculous notion. That’s how they’ve chosen to discuss it. Real anti-intellectual psychobabble if you ask me.
That’s funny…and cute too!
Good one.
I appreciate the novelty here, but can we take a moment to consider this with some perspective?
We’re talking about a chapter of an organization in a county with only 2% black population, that makes up only 3% of the state population, which is only a little more than 2% of the national population.
This is all rather distracting, but it really amounts to not much at all in any larger aspect of the NAACP, or even Washington state in general, or any larger conversation about race in this country.
rotflmao!
I think you can blame Melissa Harris-Perry for that one, who on Saturday suggested that Rachel Dolezal might in fact be black if she identifies with being black.
So, if only she had decided she was African American sooner, all this could have been avoided?
What! The! Fuck!? I can’t take it anymore. That’s it – no more clicks.
Howard gave this ingrate a FULL scholarship. My oh my. This story just gets weirder. BTW, she didn’t get the teaching gigs because her art isn’t original – its at best derivative – and in at least one case, she attempted to pass of Turner’s painting as her own without any citation. It reflects well on Howard University that they stopped supporting her. She is apparently incapable of feeling any gratitude or shame.
Funny thing is that transracial kind of is a thing. Lots of Asian women go under the knife to look more Caucasian. In many countries, the more white you look the better your opportunities, so bleaching of the skin and straightening of the hair is also very common. Fact is that many people try to look as white as possible and nobody says a damned thing about it.
But a white person who wants to be accepted as black? Qu’elle horreur!
But that is not the same as being “transracial.” I have never heard any account of people bleaching their skin because they in fact believe they are Caucasian. They simply associate pale skin with beauty. The issue here is not simply that Rachel Dolezal tried to make her skin look darker. Rather she actually tried to pass herself off as African American complete with fake stories of being whipped because of her skin color, fake frizzy hair that she claimed was her “natural look” and false claims that she had been the victim of hate crimes as a result of her race.
