So perhaps Dolezal can join her and Sharpton on MSNBC’s stellar line up.
Well, I’m just waiting for John Boehner to break his silence. Sounds to me like this might be a good time to get it out there that he’s … you know, not really white. Or nice – but that’s a whole other thread.
As J. Marshall said, its closer to body dysmorphic disorder than some kind of newly coined word like “transracial”. At least I think that’s where I read that.
Both Melissa Harris Perry and just now Eric Dyson on MSNBC seem to think there’s something to the notion of transracial. I call that dishonest bullshit, which for all the good Rachel Dolezal may have done in her life towards advocacy for African-Americans, it really lets her pathology off the hook a bunch (or ignores it entirely) by enabling her to get away with how crazy and delusional she really fucking is and has been.
It just now occurs to me that she should be the poster child of conservatives who hate affirmative action and consider themselves victims of “reverse racism.” In their world, black people have all the power because they can play the race card and get free stuff. And here we have proof, where a white woman’s only way to succeed is to pretend to be black. See how much better they have things?
They also believe that illegal aliens get all kinds of great benefits we don’t, including free housing and Social Security; and can literally get away with rape and murder. So we just need to find a white person pretending to be an illegal Mexican immigrant and they might finally begin to have a point.
[cough] Michael Jackson
Wombat performance art.
Precisely. This isn’t a person suffering from some heretofore unknown or unrecognized psychological condition that causes her to believe she is, in fact, a different race than she really is. Her behavior, time and again, indicates she knows very well that she’s a white person, doesn’t actually identify as a black person and was instead just engaged in some sort of sociopathic game of trying to fool everyone. Her absurd, offensive and maladaptive behavior may well be associated with mental illness, but it ain’t some “trans” thing in the sense of transgender folks.
Last I checked, most transgender folks know they’re not in the right body and are open about that fact, because there is real emotional and mental anguish associated with it and they want it to end. They don’t simply declare they are magically and actually the other gender and then try to fool everyone. Rather, there is a real acknowledgment of their predicament, which is important, because that’s the kind of thing that could mark the difference between being transgendered and being full-on delusional (or, like Dolezal, a big fat fakey faker). To the extent they dress in gender appropriate clothing for someone who is biologically of the other gender, the intent is not to fool anyone…because generally nobody really is fooled…but because it feels normal and more appropriate to them and helps assuage the psychological pain they feel when forced to behave in a manner that does not feel normal. None of those indicia of sincerity are present with this Dolezal idiot, who apparently thought she could just live out her own private version of Soul Man.
And, frankly, I have to admit to feeling no surprise whatsoever that the shit-for-brains in the MSM on both sides of the aisle have been entirely confused and insensitive enough to engage in making this inept and utterly broken analogy. There’s still a long way to go for most of society to actually understand any of the LGBT community, Ts being the hardest of all for them to understand or, at the very least, have true empathy for…and most of them will never make the journey. Instead, they’ll do shit like watch the Crying Game and then declare themselves edumacated.
I was watching that debacle, too, and kept thinking ‘WTF is she talking about?’ If she actually had a point, her explanation was so convoluted as to be imperceptible.
I did watch an interview with her parents this morning on Thomas Roberts’ show. They seem like really nice people but this girl has some real deep issues. She sent threats to herself to make it all seem real. The woman needs psychiatric help
Rachel has been a kind and tireless local advocate. She got so much done because she is well liked in our community. You have to understand also, that we have very few black people in Spokane. So here is an unspoken women with black children and a powerful voice. She fooled us. In the end, it was all a con.
When a person as white as Ms. Dolezal tries to pass as black it is wrong. She would have done well in this town with the truth. The problem is not that she identified with black culture. I don’t think we even have a problem with trying to look black. The problem is the lie, the arrogance of privilege she displays by adopting another identity. Those who are black have a much harder time in this culture being white. We don’t need more liars in this town.
It really is a damb shame that such a nice and powerful person, such an outspoken advocate for justice, really was just playing a role, playing at the victim, the whole time.
Actually the percentage of people in the United States with African heritage hovers around 13 percent, which is about the same percentage for Washington State. On the other hand, as you stated, the city of Spokane has a very small Black population of only 1.9 percent.
I know no black adults as close friends. I can think of one I even know. My daughter’s kindergaten had one black boy, but he moved away. Most of the black children in her school have white parents. The most common minority ethnicities in town are of Asian and south East Asian descent. Spokane is not a cruel or racist place, in general, however. We simply don’t have enough minorities to develop any negative opinions.
Side note that I think is important. One “minority” which we have and I often hear inappropriate comments about are “russians” which is anybody from east of Warsaw.
Self-identity is one thing, but the one true way to determine if someone is black in America is to see if George Zimmerman gets off the hook for killing her, and I can’t see a jury letting him off the hook for shooting Dolezal.
That’s kind of a confusing statement for me to understand. Not sure I get what you’re saying there. There are plenty of all white communities around the country that have developed negative opinions of ethnic and racial minorities moving into what they consider their particular neighborhoods. In many ways that’s how they’ve signaled their desire to remain predominantly white community over the years. And in many cases, that’s exactly how redlining became so prevalent since the early 30’s in many big cities and suburbs around the country.
I don’t know if I’d weight things the way you are. Action is substance, and that tends to matter. By your own account, she wasn’t “just” playing. There is a lie, no doubt, and also real positive work, no doubt, on the table. One doesn’t negate the other. Would you rather have a person actively harming the community but being honest about it? It seems rather complicated to me, but that’s humanity. I’m not going to pretend to be able to peer into anyone’s soul, but it’s unrealistic to think this was just about her playing to her.
The terms have been around for a while, actually. They just got new attention with this story.
• http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=transracist
• http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=transethnic
They may well have been (probably were) around before that, but that is one documented benchmark. I’ve seen quite a number of people claiming it is a word that was just invented last week, but a few minutes on google and you can debunk that quite rapidly.
Precisely. She’s a con man. Doesn’t matter what her state of mind was (other than what you pointed out).
