Discussion for article #226540
Some other things Republicans donāt want their kids to be: tolerant, unselfish, educated, unarmed and intellectually curious.
Having been through this, resisting it (which I didnāt, for the record) only makes it worse. It was weird - she was a borderline behavioral problem and once she got that off her chest she was cooperative, helpful, respectful, everything.
Of course Republicans would be upset if their child was gay ā they invest so much of their energy making life difficult for those who are.
More upsetting to me? Those gay Republican children might join Log Cabin Republicans.
My daughter is president of the GSA (gay-straight alliance) at her high school, but is straight, I believe. I am proud of the way she stands up for what she believes in. However, if she were to come out as gay, I would probably be categorized as āsomewhat upsetā. Not that she is gay, but because of the widespread discrimination she would face in the future. Many people still seem to believe that sexuality is a choice, and it is not.

Poll: Most Republicans Would Be Upset If They Got A Free Lunch

In a few more years the old GOP will be a distant memory and a regional party full of mid-west and southern assholesā¦ Ok, maybe it is already!
Is there another poll on how many children are upset that their parents are Republicans?
FTFY Most Republicans are cool with a free lunch for themselves, just not for you.
Nonsense. Republicans are entitled to free lunches because they, unlike everyone else in the nation, pay taxes.
Well, many of them donāt actually pay taxes because they have offsetting deductions and credits, but they file returns showing they would have had a whopping tax liability if they hadnāt paid those shysters to keep Uncle Samās fat hand out of their honest, hardworking pockets. Which is why they should get a free lunch, because, unlike everyone else, theyāre Makers rather than Moochers!
This is a surprise!!! NOT
I have a 27 year old niece who I believe is gay but is not out yet. I know her parents love her and while they may be surprised (I doubt it) I am sure it will all be okay for them. I hope if she is, she can find the strength to come out so she can live her life as who she is.
You could stop the title of the article at āMost Republicans Would Be Upsetāā¦just sayināā¦
You make a superb case Steve.
But donāt overlook Ā®s privileged capacity for ginning-up self-righteous poutrageā
even when they have every chit in their pocket.

These are some really good numbers, for those of us who remember how cheap and easy it was for the DNC to vilify gay Americans 20 years ago. Imagine if, in a Congress where Paul Wellstone and Patrick Leahy join with 83 other Senators including Rick Santorum and Strom Thurmond in favor of DOMA, polling data on parental disapproval for an LGBT child broke down like this:
Republicans + 20
Democrats - 40
I donāt know if it might have materially altered the political calculus of the vote. It certainly would have still passed Gingrichās House. But there were 47 Democrats in that Senate, and only 1/3 of them voted against DOMA. No way would it go down like that now.
So yeah, call it ābackwardsā or āsurprisingā if youād like, but itās really most surprising in retrospect considering the avalanche of public opinion that has had to give way in order to get here.
Funny. Thatās how Iād feel if my child told me he was a republican. And that is clearly a choice. A very, VERY bad choice.
Someone is surprised by yet another fact presented that Republicans are ignorant morons?
Thatās OK. Iād be upset if my parents were Republicans.
Iām definitely no statisticianā¦but Iād be curious how the methodology approached response bias in this poll. While undoubtedly self-identified liberals are more accepting of homosexuality then self-identified conservatives, and undoubtedly there has been a trend toward greater acceptance, it would seem likely that liberals would likewise feel greater social pressure to respond in a certain way, particularly to what is in many cases an entirely hypothetical question. This would tend to skew the poll toward a more dramatic result.
