“Upset” is a very generic term and could really apply to any initial reaction a parent might have to their child coming out. While I may not have an issue with a child coming out to me, I think it’s a fantasy to believe that most initial reactions would be “Great! You’re gay.” I believe that has less to do with rampant homophobia on the parent’s part and more of a concern of what their child will now have to endure considering being gay isn’t actually embraced by too many in this country.
