Discussion for article #223462
Itās truly amazing to see a newcomer with a 25 point lead over a sitting governor. If Ras has him 20 then 25% is probably spot on. I know Corbett is a Medicaid expansion denying asshole and more information has recently come to light about his slow-walking of the Penn State investigation, but what else has he done to make him so hated in the state? Any Pennsylvanians out there care to break down for me?
Maybe itās just that he hasnāt done anything right?
That canāt be. GOPs say itās 2010 all over again.
The spread is less notable to me than the fact that he has increased his share above 50%. Thatās wonderful.
Iām also thrilled to see a TPM article citing a PPP poll without referring to it as āDemocratic-leaningā.
ā¦thereās that pesky 27% factorā¦ some of the people all of the time?
Hear ye, hear yeā¦we finally have some good sane and sensible news here.
A 27% approval rating in a state like PA is pretty stunning. A GOPer or Dem typically has a floor of 30-35%. This guy is even greatly losing Republicans.
Medicaid Expansion Denying Asshole
M.E.D.A.?
Thereās a label that applies to more than a few Republican Goobs.
ā¦how about a grassroots backlash against the astroturf overreach of 2010? Or something like that.
But, but, but this is supposed to be the year of GOP comeback. All of the Very Serious People are certain the Dems will get wiped out this year.
If you donāt believe them, just ask President Romney.
Iām a Pennsylvanian, family in the York area (Wolfās hometown), Lancaster Co. and Reading (most citizens below the poverty line of any comparable US city!). Now I live in Philly, so I hear quite a few sides. Besides his poor handling of the Sandusky case as AG, I think 2 things will sink Corbett: slashing funds for public education and refusing to tax the frackers. It used to be just Philly schools were chronically underfunded but now districts all over the state are feeling the pain of essentially $1 billion in cuts since Tom took office - people are not happy. At the same time, Corbett took tons of campaign cash from the frackers, who he then proceeded to treat with kid gloves - they pay the least in state taxes compared to other fracking states, even Red ones. During the primaries, all the Dem candidates hammered the same message: tax fracking at higher levels (where else are they gonna go?!) and use the money to properly fund public education. If Wolf continues with that message - stressing the ideas of FAIRNESS & EQUITY - heāll win. Wolf is a likable guy and heās not from Philly, which makes him palatable to a lot of the folks in Pennsyltucky parts of the state. Oppo research failed to turn up anything that could really damage him in the primaries, so Iām pretty optimistic about his chancesā¦
Thanks so much for such a thorough explanation! It really sounds as though Meri was right, he just hasnāt done anything right. Taking money from schools and giving it to frackers, his big campaign donors? Why in the world would anyone think that would go over well?
And if they find out he purposefully slowed down the Sandusky investigation, heāll be run out of town on a rail.
His statements on fracking legislation suggests he puts profits of gas industry first, and Pennsylvanianās health concerns last. I live in Md, but have been following him. Heās also anti voting rights, pushed hard for requiring IDās.
This is good news. While the big focus remains on the Senate, some Governorās races may be just as important. Especially looking towards the 2016 presidential race. With a Democratic governor in Penn., the GOP will have a hard time suppressing minority votes. Now on to Wisconsinā¦
Not only has Corbett cut funding for education (it has not helped that two children have died in Phila. schools because no nurse was available to lend immediate assistance), that is a sticking craw and will not be soon forgotten.
He has cut funds to many social service safety nets that cover people across a broad spectrum of needs - disabled (physical and mental), substance abuse, catastrophic illnesses, not to mention heās trying to close down the AAAs and make it necessary for seniors to go into for- profit nursing homes. He tried to privatize the lottery. His veiled attempt at voter suppression with the stupid voter ID law.
He also displays a very offending attitude when people disagree with him. āIf you donāt like it, tough.ā His spurious claims that heās bringing in jobs is a laugh!
Wolf is not a total unknown, although not a lifetime politician. He served as Secretary of Revenue under Rendell. Granted this is not a marquee cabinet post. But his educational background from M.I.T. doesnāt hurt either.
The day after the election, everyone who was in the race met with the party bigwigs for breakfast for a āunityā photo. Everyone was all smiles. The sense is that Dems are going all out to make sure Corbett is a one time governor. Anytime your own party didnāt really want you as the standard bearer, thatās saying something. Wolf really is a viable choice against Corbett.
It is not a surprise to me.
Firstly, the guy seems immediately likable and the number of things that have been ābadā to have come out about him havenāt been all that.
Second, this race is seriously one that the Dems couldāve won by running a paper bag. Thatās not to say Wolf is a bad candidate, but Corbett is so eminently unlikable and has no redeeming qualities as a governor, I was surprised that Corbett was elected in the first place.
Also, I believe Corbett mightāve been one of those obstructionist governors when it came to ACA. I know my best friend growing up was trying to apply for ACA and railed against the roll-out, wrongly blaming Obama for the problem when it was Corbett who prevented the federal website.
Itās the Democratsā race to lose.
It looks like Democrats are doing very well in both Florida and PA. Kasich of OH and Snyder of MI are polling really well against their Democratic opponents, but Walker of WI only barely has a lead. If Dems can pick up FL, PA, WI, and maybe Secretary of State in OH, then weāll be in an excellent position to protect the vote for 2016.

Wow, this guy is far more awful than I ever realized. Thanks for schooling me.
1 Billion cut in education was a biggie for a lot of folks.
Ties with a cover-up of the Penn State child molestation fiasco was also big. Then, Corbett sues the NCAA for the sanctions against PSU, which PSU already accepted, and everyone is WTF?
Voter ID was roundly disapproved by a majority, and eventually thrown out by the courts.
Fracking: pushing no control over fracking by localities, even if environmental concerns. And, a biggie, the only state that does not have gas royalties. Dems want a 5% fee, Wolf wants 10%.
Green energy: no enforcement of energy credits like neighboring states caused a surge and collapse of solar installations (+wind?)
No ACA or medicaid expansion in a state that really needs it.
Equates same sex marraige with ābrother and sisterā
And frankly, the guy has no presence or charisma. Heās a fencepost trying to get re-elected.
Donāt forget the comment on forced ultrasounds - āIf you donāt like it, you can just close your eyesā
But yeah, the across-the-board slashing of education funding and being in bed with the frackers are the two biggies on the 'burgh side of the state.
