Because the GOP believes in original intent and strict Constitutionalism.

I take it 57% of polled Republicans have not actually looked at one line of the Constitution either.

“It almost goes without saying that the Establishment Clause of the Constitution prohibits establishing of a national religion.”

“Almost,” which is to say “apparently not.” Seems we’re going to have to shout it in their faces, spittle strongly encouraged, for a long time to come. They are fucking retards.

The only kind: Redneck style where only white and straight people are allowed to worship with a gun strapped to them.

That would be the Protestant Reformed Church of Armaments and Heavy Weaponry.

Boom—finally a polling firm with some sense gets at the true nature of today’s Republican Party: it’s nothing less than a theocratic party, something that Andrew Sullivan has been saying for several years. Now it’s just out in the open. Evangelical Christianists and their fellow-traveling Opus Dei Catholic reactionaries, Mormons, and other assorted conservative sects have completed their takeover of the Republican Party; it took about 40 years, but they’ve pulled it off.

Y’all may laugh, but in pretty short order you’re going to see increasing calls from the Republican base for a Constitutional Amendment to establish Christianity as the state religion. I can’t think of a more stark dividing line between the GOP and the Democratic Party. Assuming the latter has the fucking balls to actually support the Constitution, that is…

Maybe some enterprising Dem should troll the Evangelical Christianist/Republican Party® and introduce legislation in Congress calling for an amendment that makes Unitarianism the official national religion.

Sure , why not like the national bird or cookie…these folks can’t grasp that millions and millions are not interetersted in having their government affiliated with ANY religion…that concept has worked splendidly for hundreds of years and does not merit any interference now

With a margin of error of 5.5%, this poll is basically meaningless.

The GOP. A constant reminder of why we can’t have nice things.

So if the percentage of the GOP favoring this was 52%, it wouldn’t be an issue then?

Yeah, Republicans are the ones who really love the Constitution, except for 60-80% of it they don’t like.
