Discussion: Pelosi Punts On Impeachment Despite Trump's Remark On Accepting Foreign Dirt

Unless you have strategy and trump cards you don’t want to reveal.

How much support was there for impeachment and conviction when committees in the Senate and the House opened their respective investigations into Nixon’s misdeeds?

Perhaps Pelosi confuses the Presidency with a tenured Professorship at Harvard.

People either choose to act or not act.

This is about whether Pelosi’s political strategy is working or not and whether impeachment skeptics have any compelling reason to not start an inquiry. My view, and that of the majority of Dems, is that her approach isn’t working and there isn’t a compelling reason to hold back on an inquiry as gleaned from the polling. The eye test tells us that Trump is acting with impunity and there’s no evidence that Pelosi’s approach is doing anything to curb it.

You can choose to throw up distractions like whether this is about someone’s patriotism or not, or you can deal with the issue at hand.

You may be right but … who’s making that argument?

To be scrupulously fair here, do we have more to go on for this than just Pelosi’s word?

Some [wo]men just want to watch the world burn . . .

I have a whole TPM hive post on a strategy for impeachment, which summarizes my oft-stated views and why I think it represents the best political strategy for Dems. You can choose to read it. Basically, you’re grasping at straws and have no credible data based defense for any of your points. You can continue to defend the indefensible but I won’t. My arguments have been clear and consistent and detailed since the report came out.

Every time this cowardly excuse for a Speaker opens her mouth she undercuts the strength of the evidence against Trump. She is his biggest enabler in the democratic party.

Instead of chasing Dem leaders around, the media should ask Reps one by one. Not hard to do imho.

There are people who can’t imagine looking beyond the statements issued by their “leaders.” Meanwhile, Perry Bacon has been trying to count House Democrats:

40 have openly called for impeachment.
150 have not openly called for impeachment – but will likely support it when a vote is taken.
10 have said they don’t want to begin the process – but will likely support it when a vote is taken.
30 may have to oppose impeachment even if a vote is called.

(These are Bacon’s estimates, not mine.)

That’s great. Glad someone did that. Still need more details. Ask Reps whether they support it and if not, why? Work on resolving their concerns and then much of the problem is solve. Don’t know why no one has done that yet.

We also no longer live in anything resembling the same media environment. Nixon wouldn’t have been impeached if at the time he had FOX, dozens of alternate news sites dedicated to protecting him, and social media. We also weren’t nearly as entrenched, red vs. blue, as we are today. Also, he didn’t have a foreign adversary disseminating lies and distortions to prop up his presidency. Plus, today’s GOP voter isn’t the same. You can show them video of PP lying about something and they’ll swear on their lives it was either doctored or that the obvious lie they just witnessed wasn’t really a lie.

I’m still of a mind that starting formal inquiries will bring more around. No one is reading a 448 page report. Giving the story with pictures for the illiterate or lazy among us can’t help but increase the favorability numbers.

Form the committee. Start the inquiries. Get on with it.

Bear in mind: (1) There are 235 House Democrats. (2) As of two weeks ago Bacon counted roughly 200 (eventual) votes for impeachment. And (3) 218 votes would be needed.

(Again: His estimates, not mine. And yes, if proper hearings can be conducted, the numbers will likely change, and not in Trump’s favor.)
