Discussion: Pelosi Declares A 'New Dawn' In Congress As Dems Take House Control

Pelosi immediately emerges as the most powerful Democrat in government — the center of the shield against President Trump and congressional Republicans.

I’m good with that.

This one always impressed me…plus, it’s fitting to what Pelosi said…

I do not watch Fox News (unless i am trapped in a waiting room), but I presume the Empty Talking Heads are already foaming at the mouth, running in circles, and biting themselves?

Meh. They’re probably launching an investigative series into Hillary’s billing records at her lawfirm in Arkansas.

Ok let’s pass the Bill, Bills identical to what the Senate unanimously passed a few short weeks ago to keep the government open and, pin this shutdown on who it belongs.

Only one word really fits to describe it…

apoplectic adjective
ap·o·plec·tic | \ˌa-pə-ˈplek-tik
1 medical : of, relating to, or causing apoplexy or stroke
2a : of a kind to cause or apparently cause stroke
an apoplectic rage
b : extremely enraged

As a Deadhead, I have to say, it’s more than kinda cool she invited one of their drummers, Mickey Hart, as her guest to watch the speaker vote hehe

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gets a bad rap for pushing back at some of the provisions of the new rules that are adopted at the beginning of each session. The progressives won a victory when they got Pelosi to drop a provision (adopted by the Repubs, natch) prohibiting any measure that raised taxes. Why would that measure even be in there?

They’re also seriously upset because the new package includes “paygo”, which requires that any measure that increases spending be accompanied by a measure that raises revenue or cuts spending in other areas. I may be old fashioned, but for the life of me I don’t see why Dems would volunteer to include those measures.

Man, how long til TPM posts their first “democrats in disarray” headline?

I’m thinking a week.

I wish I had a source at the tip of my fingers, but IIRC the rule is exactly that: it can be waived. There’s a statute too that has to be expressly disavowed, and you’d need Senate consent to do that b/c they both have to pass the same bill. Symbolically, the rule matters. Substantively, I’m not so sure.

It leaves open the Possibility to raise taxes as appose to the GOP position of cutting benefits. Or as it is called Cut to Pay. It is all positioning

Enough with institutional rituals and formalities, even as nice as they are to see and enjoy today - let’s get to work!

Regarding impeachment proceedings, I’m pretty confident Pelosi will be able to thread the needle in not being too far ahead of the public, but on the leading edge of the curve. This is when having extensive experience in office pays off because we don’t just want impeachment, we want a reasonable chance for conviction or a resignation.

Cover. You include “Pay Go” to make the argument that you’re fiscally responsible and conscious of the need to be conscientious with the peoples’ money. You then let AOC have a win gaining what you both really wanted anyway so her win, the political pressure she brought to bear, functions as your political beard.

ETA: Mark my words…AOC is good stuff…tons of promise there, but she’d prove herself a pompous idiot not to accept that she has a lot…A LOT…to learn from Pelosi. Frankly, her best move would be to try to attach herself to Nancy’s ass and become her protege, not attempt to elevate herself by becoming Nancy’s scold and foil. Based on my analysis above, that’s PRECISELY what you do with a protege in order to build them up. What the fuck does Nancy need the “wins” for at this point? She doesn’t, but AOC will sure benefit from them.

Unlike many others, she doesn’t have to have permission from a network “newsperson” or commentator to make decisions and do her job.
