Truly spiritual people are not provoked by depictions of their spiritual leaders, even unflattering ones. What if her primary goal is to provoke left-thinking Americans to take the side of the jihadis, and so lose political support, by arguing against the fundamental American value of free speech? Look, I fucking hate Pam Geller. I agree she too is a terrorist. But she’s succeeding is framing us as terrorists, to the extent that we make the predictable knee-jerk reaction of saying no one should insult the “Prophet,” and that they deserve to be killed by jihadis if they do. There may be no God but God, but Mohammed is not Her prophet, and I should be free to say that without fear.
Spot on.
I think Geller is a nasty, possibly crazy person. But she has a right to have contests and show cartoons, for Cripes sake. Free speech isn’t just the speech I like.
The idiots who came to her event to kill other people for being offensive deserve to be dead, and if nastiness like Geller’s smokes more of them out of the woodwork to be similarly eliminated as they attempt to kill fellow citizens, I think it is a good thing.
One note, Geller pretty clearly expected this, and had the security on hand to deal with the consequences of her incitement. She’s probably not completely crazy.
But if you’re response to being offended is to get a weapon and try to kill somebody peripheral to the event, then I’m glad to see the appropriate consequences ensue.
Yet when some Christian shoots a Dr. at an abortion clinic, that’s someone wanting to save freedom.
Exactly!
two lives… so far.
“Dear Mr. Kettle, please let me introduce you to Mrs. Pot. Mrs. Pot please meet Mr. Kettle.”
why would you want to punish a Muslim family like that?
She’s a vicious bigot. Scum. I say this as a fellow Jew. The Islamist fanatics are crazy and vicious too. I await the day she will defend my Free Speech rights when I say: I Piss on Your Phony Racist Christ.
Is “free speech” a part of this?
Remember that from Die Hard 3? In this case the character portrayed by Willis is just exercising his “free speech” rights in an inner city neighborhood ( under duress to be sure ). Did he have a reasonable expectation to be received with civility?
No. The First Amendment guarantees the right to speak but it doesn’t require anyone to like what you say. Watch the movies and you’ll see the expected reaction. Geller must have known ( perhaps wanted ) violence a likely consequence of this “contest”. She wanted that and she damn near, in an act of total selfishness and attention getting, got a lot of folks killed. And how much you wanna bet has the circumstances been reversed…2 Christian guys dying attacking an affront to Christ…she’d be all for that attack and find the “speech” unacceptable.
Pam’s career has been in the media. She says her “political consciousness” came about because of 9/11. She started an anti-Islam blog in 2004 and became increasingly active. Then she got divorced in 2007. Now she seems more and more strident and hateful. Coincidence? I think not. I suspect she blames Islam for her family problems.
Two wrongs do not make a right and snake battles never have a clear favorite, a snake wins and a snake loses.
This is an awful person targeting ignorance and hate and inciting anger and violence as a business plan. Its the PT Barnum circus platform.
She has found her niche and is exploiting it for easy money. Pamela Geller seeks fame and fortune through infamy and divisiveness. Her type of ugly goes all the way to the bone.
Being Jewish she might not care.
In fact she alluded to that scenario in an interview done with CNN a couple years ago. She shaid such a thing wouldn’t happen.
This is one ANGRY woman.
I’d be ok with that…as long as the Muslim family was in Syria.
When Dubya, Darth Cheney and Rummy invaded Iraq, overextended our military and began torturing people in a concentration camp known fondly as Gitmo, they were giving Al Qaeda and the rest exactly what they wanted.
No different here. Geller’s hate party got exactly what it wanted, what it had…and I say this with all seriousness…hoped to incite. Her imaginary martyrdom is now confirmed.
Agree and the very best thing anyone in the Islamic Community could have done was to have ignored the event and this woman, she is seeking publicity why give it to her.
Seriously. She reminds me of the old joke:
Woman: “If I was your wife, I’d poison your coffee!!!11one1!!”
Man: “If I was your husband, I’d drink it.”
As some one in another thread said, what if talking about gun control starts provoking 2nd amendment fanatics to go on shooting sprees? Should we stop talking about gun control at that point because it may provoke a response?
Talk about false equivalencies! Look, anyone who shoots at another person for doing something they don’t like is wrong, BUT talking about gun control in a country where there are more guns per capita than most any place in the world is not equal to making fun INTENTIONALLY of someone else’s religion.
The whole thing is contaminated with lunatic / despicable behavior -
The idiots who showed up ready to kill because they were theologically offended & adhere to the idea that an action (spoken or written or drawn or danced or whatever) that they find offensive to their faith - entitles them to kill/execute the person who they deem to be responsible for the action - that is crazy - it is homicide - or in this case it was attempted homicide.
But when it comes to Geller - well here’s a malicious, conniving, opportunistic hate-monger - - she knew exactly what buttons she was pushing to call the crazies out of the wood work - a publicized contest to draw the most outrageous blasphemous image of Muhammad was blatantly designed to incite & outrage - it was like putting out bait to draw out & then kill what she was hunting.
She’s also known for the occasional illiterate, incoherent rants on her blog. Alcohol abuse is suspected.
Not really an “old joke.” It really happened.
Nancy Lancaster, Lady Astor, once said to Winston Churchill, "Winston, if I were your wife, I’d poison your tea,: to which Churchill replied, “Nancy, if I were your husband, I’d drink it.”
