Discussion: Oregon Town Watches Warily As Armed Protesters Take Over Wildlife Refuge

Discussion for article #244248

I see the townspeople are still bitching about the spotted owl being saved from extinction in the 1980s, by Republican George H.W. Bush’s Administration. Somebody had to stop these usurpers from COMPLETELY destroying the Northwest’s Old Growth forests.

So this guy, for example, supports the anti-environmentalists AND the arsonist poacher ranchers. He sees both sides: :unamused:

“a logger until the federal government declared the spotted owl a protected species in the 1980s, damaging the local logging industry, said he also sympathizes with the frustrations expressed by the Bundys [and blames their troubles on Bill Clinton, we see in the text].”

This doesn’t seem very difficult for the feds. Cut the place off. Tell the people inside that the power will be cut off in X hours. If the building is heated with gas, cut it off. If it’s got oil heat, let them burn down the supply. Keep outsiders from re-supplying the folks inside. Then just wait.

The Steens Mountain wilderness is not Spotted Owl habitat. But don’t let facts get in the way of blaming your economic problems on the wrong people.

Pssst, TPM or AP or whoever wrote that headline: When people carrying weapons seize a government facility to advance their political agenda, they’re not “protesters.”
They are terrorists.

It would help if the media avoided that town completely. All they really want is to be on TV. Deny them their celebrity and they will go home.

I think that depends on the skin tone of the people involved.

They are getting the FULLEST MSM coverage unfortunately. 5 CBS News anchors corralling them at once, for example.

Comey, the head of the FBI, is the flagrant coward letting terrorists threaten my country. Obama’s goon squads are only there to kill and arrest blacks, Syrians, and anyone else they want minimized, if not removed from the planet. Comey is the liar who stages false flag “terrorists” all the time by arming them, giving them a plan of attack, and then bushwhacking them with charges of terrorism. In fact, the FBI are the terrorists, setting up folks who have some hatred for the government but would never arm and attack it on their own, without the FBI’s planning, arming and backing them up. This is who Comey and the FBI are: domestic terrorists along with these white terrorists.

Since Ammon & Ryan are out playing in Oregon, it is a good time for the Feds to pay Cliven a visit and haul him in.

WooHoo! A bunch of whacko Rightie gun-nuzzling lunatic Welfare Cowboys taking over a federal building, terrorizing a town, and all in support of a couple of convicted criminals…criminals who, by the way, say they don’t want the whacko Rightie gun-nuzzling lunatic Welfare Cowboys support! _____ ~Happy New Year!~ from the Right Wingnuttery!
And what a sterling assortment of Rightie tools it is: ‘Cliven Bundy and his two special snowflake sons, a couple of loons who were Bundy enablers in Nevada…and, “It’s-A-Wingnut-Grifter-Party-Now”-Jon Ritzheimer. Ritzy’, of course, has made his mark by threatening to destroy mosques and draw the prophet Muhammed, kidnap US senators, sell his motorcycle to buy guns… and “…die in defense of the Constitution” ___obviously by seizing public building and murdering federal agents.

Wonder how many of these brave patriots fell on the field of battle seizing a closed and empty building? (*Falling on the snow and ice and “bustin’ their asses” doesn’t count.)
Hey you Super Patriots! “Area 51” is not that far away and the temps are milder! Go seize that place, you wussies.)

It must be fucking awesome to be white. You can seize land from the federal government, walk down the street with an assault rifle across your shoulder, and mouth off to law enforcement without getting killed. You even have a news network that describes all of the above as the action of freedom loving patriots.

It must be fucking awesome to be white…smh

“Ryan Bundy told The Associated Press Sunday he hopes to turn the land over to local authorities so people can use it free of federal oversight. He said he hopes the takeover of the property will prompt others to take action across the country to seize local control of federally managed land.”

If a guy handed you the keys to a home and said, "Here you go, this house is yours, I took it from the owner and I'm giving it too you," what kind of knucklehead says "Thanks, I never thought Bob owned that house fair and square anyway, I'm glad to have it."? On what fricking planet do you grant access and use of something to others when it's not yours in the first place?

Let’s take this claim one step further. No rancher or miner or logger owns the land, either. They just want it…for free. Just like Bundy himself…he wants to be able to graze his cattle on lands he doesn’t own…without paying for it.

This place is a Cooperative, which means the land is owned by a combination of private citizens and the Federal government. Not one of those private citizens is in this group.

Boiled down, they are arguing that THEY want to be able to take whatever land they want, and the owner, be it another private citizen or a government entity, be damned.

I don’t get it. The argument that the government is hampering westerners’ use of public lands (for logging, recreational fishing/hunting, grazing and mining) eludes me. If the government managed public land allowed access for those activities, than the government can at rescind those permissions. Just because you had your cattle eating grass on public lands, does not mean you own that space now. The Bundy interviews talk about the government ‘taking’ land and how the Constitutional rights of the people are being violated. I don’t see that. As a matter of fact, if public lands are being used for the personal profit/income of loggers, cattle owners and miners… I want compensation for it. After all, I am a taxpaying citizen and that land is partially mine as well as everybody elses. You can not burn areas of public land and you can not occupy Federal buildings. Both are violations of the law and require authorities to take action. Pissing, moaning, whining and bullying under the guise of ‘defending the constitution’ and ‘restoring rights’ appears to be the Bundy mode of operation. I used to think that cowboys were made of sterner stuff… now, not so much.
