Discussion: Oregon Shooting Suspect Is Reportedly Chris Harper Mercer

Say you were a citizen of New Zealand. Not well traveled. Had a desire to see a bit of the world. Would the propensity for random, senseless gun violence and death in the United States factor into your exploration decisions? There are a lot of interesting nations to visit, with countless cultural, historical and natural wonders to behold. In the grand scheme of things missing out on the Grand Canyon, Broadway, Miami Beach or Puget Sound is a fair trade-off for the allure of other places. If nothing else you won’t have to see Rebel flag enveloped jackals toting AR-15s in odd venues, having to wonder when the next massacre is going to break out.

brains, a zombie joke?

He too often forgot to wear his anti-Z-Ray helmet.

These shootings have occurred with regularity for the past 30 years, so it begins to feel like an American institution, or a weird lottery where the winner gets infamy and the losers pay with their lives, permanent injury or loss of a loved one. And like most private lotteries where the operators reap the profits, here the profits accrue to the gun manufacturers. Interesting, nobody can say how much they profit, because gun makers tend to be privately held, e.g.:

Glock Gesellschaft m.b.H. Private
SIG SAUER INC Private
Beretta U.S.a Corp Private
Colt Defense LLC Private
FABBRICA D’ARMI PIETRO BERETTA SPA Private
American Derringer Corporation Private
TAURUS INTERNATIONAL MANUFACTURING, INC. Private
The Marlin Firearms Company Private
Crosman Corporation Private
Remington Arms Company, LLC Private
SPRINGFIELD, INC. Private

An interesting account from the Guardian. The Illuminati? Really?

An email address, “ironcross45@gmail.com”, was found to be associated with a Chris Harper Mercer of Winchester, Oregon, via a public records search. That address is linked to an account on the torrent upload site kat-ph.proxy-x.com, which bears the username “Lithium_Love”.

The final video uploaded by Lithium_Love to the torrent site, just three days ago, was a BBC documentary called Surviving Sandy Hook about the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012.

Other uploads include PDFs of the occult magazine Phenomena, conspiracy-themed documentaries including Lost Secrets of the Illuminati, and assorted soft pornography.

According to Antonin Scalia, it’s there. It’s a subclause of the Constitutional “right to self-defense” that you’ll also have trouble finding, because Scalia made it up in DC v. Heller.

This “right to self-defense” was pulled out of the ass of a Surpreme Court justice who complains that the SCOTUS created a Constitutional “right to privacy” out of whole cloth in Griswold v. Connecticut.

Lesson? Made-up rights are OK if they involve guns.

Considering the comments attributed to this guy (about fame and such) I’m really shocked that TPM would plaster his name across the top of their website. Talk about tone deaf…

I agree with Overreach above, and believe this would be an important research and reporting topic for TPM. Are these mass-shooters motivated by infamy? Should there names be withheld by responsible journalists to deny them the infamy they seek? Should we all refrain from posting their pictures and personal information? Is there any research that indicates that this would be appropriate and responsible public policy?

If pressed on the technical language of the 2nd Amendment gun activists would merely create a system wherein everyone wanting a gun as an individual would be signed up as a member of a state militia. And Red State legislatures would enable the ruse. Once that was litigated SCOTUS could simply say it was the right of all citizens to join a state militia, and Blue States would be forced to allow militias, just as Red States feel they’re forced to allow gay marriage. You take an on-line militia course, sign a form committing to showing up in various emergencies, and “Bingo!”, you’re in the militia. And have unfettered access to guns. The NRA would probably even work it out where militia members were granted automatic open carry privileges and exempted from background checks on a national basis.

As usual, the BBC has the shooter’s bio. “Oregon college gunman Chris Harper-Mercer was reportedly born in the UK, posed with a gun in a photograph online and appears to have posted material showing support for the Irish Republican Army (IRA).”

We have to put a stop to these conservative Republicans and their war on Christians!

The worst thing liberals do it say Happy Holidays- but conservative Republicans let their guns do the talking.

Is that a Glock in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?

MySpace? Is that still a thing? Please tell me he had an AOL email account…

Seeing how eager so many are to make political hay out of these shootings, it’s clear to me that finding the name of the shooter(s) and sharing it quickly is actually a high priority not just for the media but for the populace as well after the event. I have no idea how to prevent such a thing in this age of mass communication and the ease of passing along information. A few may say that it’s better to deny the shooters fame, but when the shooters are dead afterwards which they often are, what’s the point when so many want to talk about what the shooting means?

He probably would’ve been just about as famous/infamous if he would’ve just found some really creative way to kill just himself.
Taking a bunch of innocent people with him just makes the memory of him bad forever. So mission failed.

The NRA isn’t 100% of the problem but they are a big part of it. The members and everyone else need to speak up or else they condone the consequences of what the NRA promotes.

The sheriff has been vocal in opposing state and federal gun-control legislation. In 2013, Hanlin sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden after the shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school, declaring that he and his deputies would refuse to enforce new gun-control restrictions “offending the constitutional rights of my citizens.”

Care to revise your statement, Sheriff? Are you really refusing to enforce new gun-control restrictions? Are you going to look every victim’s family members straight in the eye and tell them face-to-face that a person’s 2nd Ammendment rights far outweigh the suffering your feeling right now?

Hell, publicize the names of all his friends. The public should have the right to steer clear of his entire social circle. Birds of a feather…

“I suspect this is going to start a discussion across the country about how community colleges prepare themselves for events like this,” said the college’s former president, Joe Olson."

If the solution is letting everyone carry on campus, that’s going to be a problem. How the hell are we going to know who’s just carrying versus who’s there to shoot and kill?

Obama is right to demand that the media show the numbers of people shot to death in America vs killed by terror attacks. The numbers are staggering.

And he lists conservative under personality. The conservative personality does seem more prone to violence - less flexibility and acceptance of others.
