I have to disagree. Sometimes you treat your enemies like the morons they are and that takes away their power. These guys are morons who have nothing but bravado. Letting them shame themselves will take a lot of wind out of a lot of sails. This was a dumb thing to do and they’ll pay the consequences for it. It’s a lot like the open carry supporters in Texas. You find that many concealed carry holders are angry because now the right to open carry has limited the ability to conceal carry because business are now saying no to both. Sometimes they have to shoot themselves in the foot and you have to let them do it.
EDIT: And I’m not suggesting there shouldn’t be consequences. I just think you enforce those AFTER this is done. That to me is where the federal government screwed up at Bundy.
Disagree. this is wrong. We have laws to be sure everyone in the society respects others’ rights. We have police departments to uphold the laws, and a justice system to determine if a law has been broken, and if so, what the consequence for breaking that law will be.
What’s going on here is vigilantism and is anti-society. It should not be tolerated at all, because if it is not dealt with, it allows others to take the law and justice into their own hands. That is a breakdown in our society.
The key failure with the Bundy situation is that no one paid a price after that protest fizzled out … The feds should be simply identifying all those involved in this situation and prosecuting them AFTER this one fizzles out … no need to incite them, but they should all be prosecuted
But the federal government could rectify that ANY DAY. Any day since that standoff ended and his goons went home. Any day from now forward. The could arrest him at any moment.
But they haven’t. So please stop pretending that this time it’ll be different, because lessons have been learned. Those lessons obviously haven’t been learned, as proven every day that Bundy is still not incarcerated.
There is ZERO reason to believe that this will be any different.
And we’re asking what evidence you have in terms of recent history that suggests to you there will be any effort to enforce consequences.
See, we have some pretty damn good evidence…some might call it precedent…that there will, in fact, be zero effort to enforce consequences. What do you have to overcome the presumption that creates?
You’ll need body armor, thing might get a little hot during the “contesting the charges” phase, and those guy aren’t as good shots as they pretend to be.
Establishing a cordon around the refuge. Not allowing those who leave to re-enter with supplies, and arresting those who do leave. Shutting off the electricity, and informing the squatters that they will be legally liable for any and all damage that occurs to the building as a consequence. Doing these things would undoubtedly require federal LE support just from a manpower standpoint, but no helicopters, Hellfire missiles, or napalm-equipped armored vehicles are necessary.
If that happens, then that’s another poor judgment call by the federal government. What they may or may not do when this is over doesn’t make it okay to escalate the situation now. Escalating this situation will do nothing but bring more whack jobs into that town. Whack jobs that could end up creating violent situations for the innocent folks. The guys in the sanctuary are weak. They are holding this ‘trial’ because they need a way out of this mess that they created. Once they are out of there and out of the town, then repercussions should be enforced. If the government chooses to let that go again, that’s just catastrophically bad judgment. That remains to be seen.
I agree 100% with you. As of today, there is no evidence of any “policing” going on in Oregon. Every day I hope that my cynicism is proven to be unjustified and unwarranted.
I believe that the Cliven case directly led to the Ammon situation. The only possible lesson that the Bundys could have learned from Nevada was that the federal government would back down when confronted by weaponry. I guarantee that they believe it was their “2nd Amendment remedy” that saved their day in Nevada.
Which then brings in a lot of militia folks from neighboring states that want nothing more than a firefight to defend their brothers ‘under siege’. That’s their whole identity and that will endanger everyone in that town. You’ll need more than law enforcement, you’ll need the National Guard. There is no situation where that turns out well for the federal government or the citizens of that community. These guys should be held responsible after this is over or if they do anything to incite violence. If they aren’t, that’s an entirely different failure.
