He is utterly unqualified to be president. His major life accomplishment was to lose a Senate race to Ted Cruz, the most hated man in the Senate. And he accomplished that in a Democratic blue-wave election year and despite having twice the money that Cruz had.
But he is a very very wealthy white man, so there’s that. It gives him a good chance in the Electoral College, which was designed by the “Founding Fathers” to keep wealthy white men in power.
We can welcome Mr. O’Rourke back to the national stage in 2028 or something (hopefully when he’s two years into his Senate term or whatever). I think he missed the window on this one.
Warren has already crashed and burned; Klobuchar is getting ready to announce; Bernie is still lurking around the fringe of the Democratic Party.
We’re gonna need a bigger scorecard.
Brown, Biden, Sanders and Klobuchar haven’t announced yet. I really don’t see why Beto has missed the boat at this point when there’s still 4 other pending candidates that aren’t officially in the race
I really liked him, but this coyness about announcing is always a total turn off. I think his best bet would be some sort of cabinet position under president Harris…
The new story about her claiming to be Native American with the Texas bar is not good. Not good at all*.
*In “real life” is not an issue, but in the petty popularity content style of our elections it will be.
It’s another example of a stupid, unforced error. I think a pattern of stupid, unforced errors should matter.
He’s been in politics for more than a decade and was elected to Texas’s 16th congressional district for three terms in the United States House of Representatives.
But, yeah, his major life accomplishment was to lose to Ted Cruz.
He may not be a good choice, but if you’re going to attack someone, do it with the facts.
Meh. Several others expected to run haven’t announced yet either, including Klobuchar, who I like alot. The only reason he seems more 'coy" is because people are all over him all the time asking, so he’s faced with more times he has to answer “not yet.”
Now you’ve put an image in my mind of a creepy old man peering beady eyed over our fence.
The sticker on my pickup says “Beto for Senate.” I am leaving it on.
If Cornyn runs in 2020, he will be joined at the hip with Putin’s Prank. I think a Senate stint is still Beto’s first choice.
Let’s do it.
Spot on…
I mean, pretty much everybody else (everybody but Biden?) has a job. Klobuchar, for example, is busy being a Senator. Maybe that doesn’t actually slow down her should-I-or-shouldn’t-I calculus, but it keeps her name in the news as a Serious Person who is Busy Doing Stuff.
Unless and until he formally announces, O’Rourke kind of has to play silly games to keep the iron hot. I think not taking advantage of the first-mover opportunity was a major strategic error.
And what did he accomplish in those 3 terms in Congress other than racking up a conservative voting record?
Not hard to find.
I’m from CA but I agree on Beto taking on Cornyn in 2020. Among other things being in a legislative body could be more productive than trying from the Oval Office to herd the cats that make up the Congress (which also leaves me ambivalent about Harris).
As to Oprah pressing him to commit for a 2020 presidential run, it’s comparable to yelling at the little old man driving in front of you on a highway doing 50 mph. He’s not ready or able to go that fast.
Not hard to find out that his accomplishments were pretty much nothing.
Oh, he did back Tim Ryan against Nancy Pelosi for House Minority Leader. Maybe that might interest all the Nancy Pelosi super-fans.
He’s another super-rich white man who thinks he is entitled to run for President despite having no qualifications for actually doing the job.
Abraham Lincoln lost to Senator Douglass in '58 so I’m not sure what you’re on about. And Beto put the fear of dog into Cruz in blood red Texas, so yeah, he punches above his weight.
I don’t know who should get the nomination yet, but Beto is definitely qualified and has demonstrated plenty of mojo. He needs to run.
