The GOP’s war on, by, and with women continues.

“The draft is there to get more people to rip the enemies’ throats out
and kill them…That is what a draft is for,” Hunter said.

But boys like that rasslin’ stuff so it’s fine for them.

I don’t support any kind of draft. Should have shot this down. Don’t force women into combat. Come on.

Hopefully we will never need a draft again.

Exactly. This is the wrong direction. We are doing fine with an all volunteer Force.

Imagine TRYING TO HOLD up AN M16 WITH boney GIRL ARMS. STUpid.

Republicans are quick to proclaim Israel is a bastion of sanity and civilization in a (literal) desert of heathen, retrograde, belligerent Middle East hellholes. They tout their military and defense as second to none and deserving of every dollar we can shovel their way. Well…

Women in the Israeli Defense Forces are female soldiers who serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Israel is the one of only a few countries in the world (along with Norway and Eritrea) with a ***mandatory military service requirement for women.***

You realize the lack of a draft is part of the reason Afghanistan and Iraq went on for ever and ever.

Hey everybody, we found a Republican who understands that war is horrible and barbaric!

Don’t worry, he’ll go back to believing war is glorious the next time some Muslim somewhere does something bad.

“My son wants to serve…”

Yeah, you all talk about “wanting to serve” and almost none of you actually do it, even when the recruitment station is 5 feet away.

You gotta be kidding.

Then you better sign up!

So we can say this had bi-partisan support.

get more people to rip the enemies’ throats out and kill them

That’s redundant and inefficient.

Thanks to the 2nd Amendment we have plenty of reminders that even a toddler of any gender can kill easily.

It is a fact that 90% of the military supports the 10% that see actual combat. There are plenty of military occupational specialties that are non-combat arms and can be filled by men or women who may never serve at the pointy end of the spear. Personally, I prefer the Robert Heinlein model where you have to serve to be eligible to vote or hold office, but I’ll accept a universal draft (no deferments, Mr. Trump) if it becomes necessary.

If we’re going to have draft registration – which we do – it should apply to men and women equally.

Period, full stop.

Edited to Add: The question of women in specific combat roles, as opposed to military service generally, is one that has to be (and is being) worked out by the military itself. But those roles are a small fraction of the military overall. There is no reason whatsoever to say that compulsory military service must apply to men, but never women.

Hunter appeared to be frustrated at some points with the direction of the discussion so he tried even harder to emphasize just how miserable the draft would be for women.

“This is about a big war,” Hunter said. “This is about when something really really bad happens and goes wrong and America has to mobilize as a nation.”

Right, because a draft would be just sunshine and daisies for any men that get called up. The fundamental fact that he is having trouble wrapping his head around is that people aren’t buying into his contention that women are less capable than men in handling that misery.

There is a long tradition of the right wingers putting in what they think will be a poison pill only to have it backfire on them Let us not forget the racists of 1964 added the word “sex” to the civil rights act, thinking no one would EVER think women should have equal rights. OOPS!

The draft is an interesting thing. I am not sure whether I support it. In principle, yes, in times of need the country should be able to draft soldiers from its citizenry. On this same principle, the drafting needs to be both fair and successful, that is the state should be able to draft those with the skills they need, without overly relying on one fraction of the population. In light of this, a draft of only males in a country fails at fairness, and potentially would fail at achieving its goals. For example, if the Army decides that cyber command is critical, being able to draft the best hackers, male or female, is what we want the government to be able to do to successfully carry out its campaign.

But, the draft in the United States has always failed to be either fair, or fully successful. In light of this, I think allowing “females to be drafted” makes sense from a gender equality viewpoint, but it seems to me that it is only one of many reforms to the draft that we should make.
