“This is about a big war…” such as the kind of war Trump would get us into. Don’t expect Eric and Donald Jr. to answer the cal, thoughl. They’d rather shoot wild animals on safari and pose for photos with the corpse.
In all fairness, according to the other article on this topic, Hunter did serve three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not that that explains why he is so much more concerned about his daughters being eligible for a draft then his sons.
What a stupid dick. WHERE did these sexist aholes COME from? I am an old person. We have fought and fought for 50 years and these young jerks come in and set everything back because of some perceived…something…chivilary? WTF???
Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) seemed worried that Hunter was going a bit off the rails
I sincerely hope the solution was to medicate him, pat his hand soothingly and urge a nap…
Teehee…Duncan Hunter Junior is an idiot just like his old man, as usual he was hoisted on his own petard.
Hunter also realizes we haven’t had a draft in 40+ years! He also mischaracterized it. We had the draft between WWII and Korea, between Korea and Viet Nam, and even a little after Viet Nam. He did what some others have stupidly done in the past- introduced legislation he didn’t support, thinking it would fail. BTW, I didn’t think any Republican supported the draft in the first place.
Unless you’re one of the ones that gets 'stop-loss’ed 4 or five times past your enlistment…
“We don’t need to turn this into an emotional discussion. We want to make it be fact based.”
LOL! Way to go, Martha!! Wish I could have seen his face after she said this.
This was touched on in the comments to the other article, but, to repeat what I said there, it sounds like he introduced it as a way to make a point about the Pentagon’s new rules on women in combat. I think what he was expecting was for people to push back against women registering for the draft/selective service and then use that as ammunition to argue against the Pentagon’s changes allowing women to take on more roles in the military. Unfortunately for him from the article it looks like that backfired on him and the women on the committee, instead of objecting, said “that’s fair” and signed onto the idea.
Hey, Israel may be the home of God and His chosen people and all that, but America is really, really, really exceptional, dammit!
Duncan Hunter … Continuing the family tradition of incompetence and lunacy.
~snicker! and meh!~
The Republican Cult members keep throwing those winning punches! Keep up the good work:
It’s not an oddball suggestion. An all volunteer army allows people to not worry about themselves or their kids being in harms way, and thus there’s less pressure to avoid and end wars.
If Bush would have had to call up civilians to invade Iraq, it might not have happened. Or at least a second term might have not happened. IMO
I think the point is that Washington, and “the elite” in general, was happy to let the war go on and shovel billions to the defense contractors because it wasn’t their kids doing four tours of duty and coming home with IED damage (physical and mental). If their kids were at risk, they would have been more cautious about sending them into harm’s way.
I’m guilty for that matter. I was against the war from the get go, but I don’t have draft age kids to worry about, so my anti-war activity was pretty much limited to arguing online with other internet message board numbskulls. If I had a son or daughter that was at risk of being drafted, I suspect I would have been more motivated to do something more substantial.
Remember Hollywood bad film director Ed Wood (bio pic ‘Ed Wood: Look Back in Angora’) famously confessed to wearing a bra and panties under his uniform while participating in WWII’s Normandy beach landing…
It’s much more likely that the lack of a draft is part of the reason Bush/Cheney outsourced the war to mercenaries like Blackwater. GOP free market capitalism at its finest.
A draft is pretty unlikely; this is about draft registration, which is (in some ways) more just about controlling citizens and building databases on them. (I missed registering for the draft, because I was just in that post-vietnam window).
I think the “all-volunteer” military has led to a bunch of social issues, both within the military and outside it (because for many young people it’s not really volunteering, it’s the one of the few non-criminal ways to get a job and and education). But I think what we really need, if we’re going to do something like this, is a national service obligation, of which military service would be – if at all – only an appendage.
Gotcha got Got.Couldn’t of happen to a better a hole.
“We don’t need to turn this into an emotional discussion. We want to make it be fact based.”
Well see, that’s their problem right there. The GOP has not taken a position based on facts over emotion for over 30 years.
I don’t see the problem here. We have women serving in the military and are finally starting to have them in combat roles as well. The barriers are falling. This guy’s bluff got called not because “oops” this is a bad thing because uh oh, the wimminz are going to be soooo mad about having to register for the draft. His bluff got called by people saying “Yeah, so what? Equal is equal and nobody said people could have all the ‘equal’ shit they want without the responsibilities that go with it.” Frankly, I don’ see how you can support women in the military and not be insulted by the attitude that they’re so fragile and so in need of paternal protection and whatever that they shouldn’t be drafted. Go tell Rhonda Rousey that and let me know how it works out for you. Register for the draft and enjoy the fact that we haven’t had one in like 50 years and almost assuredly won’t for the long-term foreseeable future. For all practical purposes the entire thing is symbolic right now anyway.
