I suspect this bit of “Berner overreach” will be fixed by a taste of reality soon. I’m sure Ocasio-Campos will serve her district well, as did Joe Crowley, who was by no means any sort of Peter King congressman! Those who are gleefully framing this as some DSA tidal wave are bonkers.
Hadn’t noticed anyone actually doing that but otherwise I agree.
What got us here is Democrats not voting. Full stop.
They came out in droves for Obama in 2008, and mostly again in 2012. Offer them a candidate that excites them, and they will vote. Get them to the polls for that one new candidate, and they’ll vote for every office on the ballot. Offer them the same 10-term candidate, yet again, and they’ll stay home.
It’s that simple.
Give them someone to vote FOR.
This young lady was someone to vote FOR - and they did.
This demonstrates that people who write headlines are not the people who do the reporting. It’s like two completely different takes. At the end of day I’m happy to see new women jump in with both feet and who’ll be ready to go on day one.
But I do love this story about a woman activist from the SF Bay Area. There’s no mistaking her intentions. They can be summed up as in your face.

[Heidi] Hess was in high disturber gear the other day when she led a clutch of Credo activists outside the suburban Virginia home of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. They played recordings of wailing children from U.S. border detention camps and chanted, “No justice, no sleep.”
The pecs dance is sexier.
And when the party is run by ageist millennials you may wish for some of the old guard to come back.
This reminds me of the old joke about how a person can get to live for a hundred years: first live for 99 years and then be very, very careful.
I disagree. I read the article quoting her. She did not refuse to support Polosi in the future. She did not call for her to be replaced.
Very good article, cause, and strategy! Civility does have its place. So does in-your-face activism.
Veering OT, but i see an onslaught of civil disobedience in the next year, the likes of which most Americans alive today have never before seen. 1968 deja vu, all over again.
Have i mentioned recently that i have lost any and all respect for Susan Sarandon?
We’ve lost most our blue dogs already. This window of data is narrow. If we look to Include those who has won their primaries in districts we are looking to flip the data is more suggestive of leftward creep.
Agreed.
But with respect plucky, I think its equally foolish to not consider it possible it is a harbinger of things to come.
Again small data set is only suggestive of a trend.
That’s right, pull the rug out from under all of them! The Democratic ticket for 2020 should be Tim Ryan for President and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Vice President.
@pluckyinky is right. She was interviewed several times yesterday on MSNBC; I saw her at least twice. She said Pelosi called to congratulate her, and that it was a lovely call: Pelosi said that while she’d miss Joe Crowley, she’d long wanted to see younger women in politics rather than being forced, like she’d been, to wait until her children were grown, and that she was looking forward to welcoming her to Congress. And when Ocasio-Cortez was asked whether she’d back Pelosi for speaker, she said she’d of course consider her, which was IMO exactly the right, savvy answer for her to give.
I thought she was terrific, and is obviously a perfect match for her district, which has not only changed demographically in Crowley’s time but which he’d neglected for years as he pursued national attention and in which he’d barely campaigned (I mean, sending a surrogate to debate your primary opponent? Sheesh…) while she really worked for it. There are obviously other candidates Ocasio-Cortez can point to as a sign of changing times; but Pelosi’s also right that her race was very much a reflection of the specs of her district, as most are; and so far, Crowley’s the only Dem incumbent [ETA: only the second?] to lose this cycle.
We’ll see how things end up, but IMO the mix of fresh blood and experience is perfect for the party, if everyone can manage to work together and keep any tensions productive. It looks to me like both Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez are more than up to the task.
Thanks for the context and let’s not do the same premature negative hot takes on Ocasio-Cortez either.
@mattinpa says it far better than I…
She won’t be old enough. You have to be 35 to run for VP also.
However she’ll be old enough to run for President in 2024 (just barely since she was born in October 1989)
Thanks
I read a few years ago that you would hear Republicans praise Pelosi off the record because she would be the only one who would ask what was going on in their district and if they needed assistance. Something that did not happen under Hastert.
