Discussion: Ocasio-Cortez Rejects Pelosi’s Spin On Her Win: ‘It’s Not Just One District’

No and please stop that kind of stuff with me. The only person that made a ridiculous “hide from the press” quip was you. Beat yourself up for it. What Pelosi should do, if she is going to talk to the press, is keep her comments helpful. There’s an old saying about “if you can’t say something nice…”

If Ms. Pelosi felt her old guard position was threatened by fresh blood the proper thing for her to do was STFU. Dismissing a fresh face and it’s ideas is damn sure no winner for the Democrats. Same ole same ole has put them right where they are.

I voted for and have very high hopes for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. Throwing out the old guard as you suggest would mean that opportunists and not real Democrats like Tulsi Gabbard and a certain former Presidential candidate who only temporarily joined the party to run for president would be given positions of power without earning them. There were people on this message board calling for a complete purge of the Democratic Party leadership the day after the Presidential election so that their wing could supplant everyone else.

All of that said, if Nancy Pelosi thinks this is an extremely progressive district, she needs to get out more. I respect Nancy Pelosi. I have heard her talk about having to wait to raise children to pursue her political career and not feeling it fair to be pushed out now because of age. I agree with that. Here in Jackson Heights we had a woman as our City Council Representative who paid her dues for decades in the local Democratic Party. She was held back by the long time, Italian, Queens Party Boss, because she was supportive of gay rights. After she made City Council and achieved a position on the Budget Committee, she was primaried and pushed out by the so called progressives in our neighborhood, whose main attack during the campaign was that she had sought a third term. The so called progressive City Councilman they primaried her and pushed her out with is now, surprise surprise, serving his third term.

I have better things to do than engage in idiotic crap like you are spitting out. Have a good day.

Such wisdom at the age of 28 she is truly amazing. And she understands that the Democrat party has come together and be a fabric of many colors woven together in strength. The Republican Party are afraid because of their skin color And becoming a relevant. The Republicans are their own worst enemy.

More troubling is an appreciable number of Democrats are guilty of same.

I think the narrative started when Pelosi belted out a 100+ word schoolgirl crush “thank you” tweet to Joe Crowley, and included a 5 word footnote of congratulations to Ocasio-Cortez. She (you) needs to understand that was bad optics, period.

To be fair it’s the end of a long trip for Nancy.

She is appealing to the moderate republican voter instead of the younger more progressive voter we will need to win in the future. I believe the swing voter today is a Republican voter. Wasting out time, money and future on such voters.

Agreed. And optics and intent are two different things.

Crowley was in leadership and is likely a friend to Pelosi.

She was just (politically) punched in the gut. Presumably stunned. She’s done a lot for the party so I will always give benefit of the doubt to her. Let’s not jump right on her unless the leadership continues to miss the movement of the base.

The establishment needs to accept the leftward turn of the party and the left needs to understand things aren’t going to turn overnight.

You know, it’s possible that there are less progressive Democrats (and donors) who need their hands held so that they keep the faith in spite of Crowley’s loss; and it’s possible that there are more progressive Democrats who could do with some energetic reinforcement for the fights ahead.

Are you suggesting Pelosi handled both these tasks perfectly well?

What got us here is people saying stuff like that.

This is a made up controversy that only exists because Republicans want to make Pelosi an issue.
Why are they going after her? Because Nancy Pelosi is effective.
Yes she’s old and yes she’ll retire within a few years.

Well, I’m sure the old guard agrees!

She intended to thank them both, and she did. It shouldn’t have taken MMQBing to realize she needed to tweet a congratulations to Ocasio-Cortez, and then send a thank you / condolences tweet to Crowley. Who cares if she felt punched in the gut? She’s the Minority Leader: when she tweets on a Primary evening, people pay attention. It’s not handwringing to suggest she retain the awareness and acumen her title implies.

That’s what the young progressives don’t understand. Pelosi has been a strong congresswoman, her district has voted for time and again for a reason, and in the end, it is their decision to make, it’s their district. The youngsters also don’t understand that the negative memes about her are all Republican propaganda they have been bombarding her with for decades. It has been so pervasive that some Dems, mostly the younger ones, fall for it as they don’t have the memory of her good works and just want to blame her which is exactly the R plan. She was a kick ass Speaker of the House and if the Rs hate her so much, then they fear her. So it would be nice if the youngsters would figure that out.

Check with @littlegirlblue for details.

old guard my ass, we are not in the position to be attacking our own. Vote in the primaries and who ever wins you give them 110 percent support. I don’t know much about Ocasio-Cortez and she doesn’t need any support to win the general but i wish her luck getting things done in congress.

The house is on fire and yet people want to address where to place a couch rather than dealing with the fing house being on fire.

Someone said: “The experienced war horses got us to where we are.”

Which is, at worst, a tautology.

Your response was, literally, to blame the person who said it!

What got us here is people saying stuff like that.

Right On… at this point I see Nancy as a proponent of the status quo rather than someone to lead forward. Chuck is not far behind.
