Discussion: Obama To Delay Executive Action On Immigration

Anyone infuriated with President Obama for once again being practical and pragmatic does not understand how politics works.

Sometimes wargreymon there’s a certain weightlessness to your posts. This is one of those times.

That’s an interesting way define the radical left joe. Can you do better?

Simple politics going on here. If Obama doesn’t offer a plan it simply means that Pubbies can’t criticize his plan or impeach him for his plan. Likewise, it permits those who are asking for immigration reform to ask Pubbies about their plan since Obama didn’t offer a plan and says he won’t offer a plan until after the elections. And when is there a better time to ask the Pubbies what their plan is than just before elections.

I suspect he can’t.

As far as a definition of the Mushy Middle, here’s Chuckles the Sensible Woodchuck:

I suppose a couple more months of waiting really don’t hurt so much. On the other hand though, this constant playing of defence politically is not only preventing anything useful from getting done - and not only on immigration - but also is sapping whatever positive enthusiasm remains for Obama and the Democrats as a whole.

At some point even a pragmatist has to wonder how much we’re sacrificing just for the chance - and only the chance - of keeping a few tired old middle of the road Senators and Congresspeople in office a few more years.

Do you understand how politics works?

Funny stuff but my brain is already full today. I’m hoping the president can answer the “radical left” question - you know, after Stonehenge, when he returns to Washington. Or how 'bout he stays in England and hosts a Druids-only town hall meeting? Yeah, it’s definitely time for my nap.

No I don’t but PLEASE don’t try and explain it to me.
(I’m beggin’ you!)

I hope it’s the Cliff Notes version.

Obama didn’t cave to GOP threats. He caved to Pryor, Begich, and Kagan - three Democrats running in red states.

When the Democrats retain control of the Senate, you’re going to come back and acknowledge that your analysis of the electoral implications of this delay were wrong. Right?

Of course he doesn’t care about progressive Democrats in the southwest and Illinois, at least not this time around.

How they do isn’t going to determine control of the Senate for the next two years.

Now, going into 2016, when those candidates will matter a great deal more, they’ll have the reform he announced in December 2014, and whatever else he does between now and then, to run on.

Udall is safe, and also only one seat.

The House is gone, and helping three or four candidates in the SW won’t bring it back this year.

I agree that it is about time for the Democrats to stand up and proudly support immigration reform. It will be exactly time as soon as this particular oddball election cycle is done.

Thank you.

I can. I could probably write a hundred pages on it.

But I’d rather not jack the thread.

As it turns out, going into immense detail to describe you is not the topic of this thread, nor remotely important.

Gotta read that again but hey, as long as Lowell Joe has it all figured out, why should I bother.

D’oh! As was planned along time ago.

One reason you might bother would be because you want to develop some understanding of politics that goes a little deeper than the one you have now.

But, then, I’m making a rather large assumption about your desires.

The Pres is playing chess here. He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t; either way, the effect it would have on Democratic candidates in November is probably a wash.

Not the radical left (of whom there are very few), Syl. Nearly all of that talk is coming from false-flag Republicans trying to split the Democratic vote by convincing us to waste our votes on third parties.

There are some here. They know who they are.
