I’m not sure that’s an apt term, really. I think I’m one of a small group that initially was MIXING the Kool-Aid. A friend of mine made me aware of Bernie back in the 2008 election and I’ve been hoping he would run from that point on. Considering the Media’s coverage and lack of debates, I think the DNC has plenty of Kool-Aid to hand out themselves…
I am not sure it helps to make the case for Sanders by comparing him to Hubert Humphrey – but seriously – I’m not going to argue your points, because I basically agree with you. However, our conclusions are different. I think the stakes are so high that I have to keep engaged – and I know that risking the presidency at all to the GOP is not an option. I don’t think Bernie has what it takes to get us where we want to go – at least not now. The country is way too polarized. I thought Obama could help transform it and I am not sure what can help – its like we are gripped with a kind of mania. So – we need the technocrats to at least hold the line until if and when the demographics in the country naturally shift.
Yes regardless of what BS the republicans say to the contrary. She is a typical woman of this era that had to put up with some man’s BS because , sadly, it was/still is about the only way for a woman to break through the steel rod reinforced, tempered glass ceiling in politics.
Considering this has been the most secretive White House yet, you’re going to have a lot trouble finding said Scandal. Maybe try going to Edward Snowden levels…
“There’s no doubt that Bernie has tapped into a running thread in Democratic politics that says, ‘Why are we still constrained by the terms of the debate that were set by Ronald Reagan?’” Obama said.
Indeed. This is a core problem for the Democrats, and it would be interesting to hear Obama ruminate on his own contribution to that problem. Just weeks after halting the great economic crash, he was talking up the Republicans agenda of austerity, and kept at it for the first three years of this presidency.
It is a Gordian Knot that the Democrats to unravel - how to win the Presidency next year – which is the most essential consideration – but how to also build a movement at the same time that pushes back against 45 years of moving right on policy and narrative?
I am contributing to the Sanders campaign because I want to help build a movement, but I am also haunted by the shadow Of McGovern – I am not convinced that Bernie can survive the Presidential campaign. Perhaps he can make that case during the primaries, but he is not there yet.
Now I know that I could not either be a politician nor a TV Host.
The takeover (if it happens) of the government by the GOP might as well be acccompanied by Stukas and Panzer tanks. It won’t of course. It would be Andrea Mitchel announcing on Election Night that the GOP has hit a “home run”, re-taking the Presidency while keeping the Senate and the House.
All with the “election sound-track” blaring in the background.
Then there would be the interviews of the delirious victors (along with family members). Some interviews with Democrats pledging “cooperation” and “conciliation”. Analysis by MSNBC of Talking Heads (along with barely smirking Republican counterparts). Maybe a take-away from a minority.
Unlike the Poles, French and Russians who had to deal with the Wehrmacht. I do have an option: Mexico. The Caribbean. South America.
Would it matter?
I will note Darcy, that you have stated on TPM that you will vote for the democratic nominee whomever that ends up being. In the meantime, I respect your decision to vote for Sanders — as actually, most do here – even when we’re engaged in argument. We surely do not need to antagonize each other with labels. So I am puzzled – I do not consider myself to be a “neoliberal” whatever that means. I am very liberal – meaning I support progressive policies same as you.
an unnaccaptable (to you) candidate getting the nomination is no reason to stay home.
Leave the presidential slot unfilled in if you must (and can’t see the obvious correlation between not voting, and republican advantage).
there is no need to hurt the local democratic party (state party helps dems up stream, redistricting etc) because your preferred candidate couldn’t win the primary of their own party.
A lot of HRC supporters like to say that the Bernie supporters are the purity police, and make such “I won’t vote” statements, yet here we are.
Did you vote in 2014 for governor? or did you sit that one out too because she was a known loser?
grow up, vote every time, show your kids they must vote. Participation is bad enough, don’t make the situation worse.
We looked into moving to both Canada and New Zealand in 2000 but could not afford it. Now I am again having recurring fantasies about selling our house and liquidating everything we own to get out of here should the crazy GOP take over completely. I think about my 17 year old daughter and want to get her safely and securely established somewhere else.
But subtly!
I enjoyed his blog and deeply appreciated his support of Obama and gay marriage. I also respected his apology for being 100% wrong about Bush and the Iraq invasion. His dissection of Sarah Palin was hilarious. I miss The Dish. However, his continued Clinton hatred is quite insane and I am glad he isn’t out there hammering away at it.
We now have the complete cheering section from the Wall Street Crime Syndicate turning against Bernie Sanders. Obama has been a complete failure to his supporters when he continued Bush/Chaney wars and then promoted TPP (job off shoring) Trade Debacle and let the criminals from Wall Street collect their bonuses for crashing our economy. He has done nothing about student debt or inequity or climate change. He promotes fracking and GMO foods along with the pharmaceutical industry’s profits. Obama has allowed Wall Street to create another massive bubble that is ready to burst. Now he is going to knife is supporters once again by backing Wall Street Hillary. Guess he wants his billionaire’s payoff after he leaves office.
Bernie Sanders is going to crush Hillary and Trump.
this has a direct corollary in that of both broadcast and cable news.
Reagan (and Fox “News”) run up big margins based on spouting BS. so democrats (and other news agencies) decide to embrace the BS and try to co-opt it.
Well, We’ve given a pass for too long on this. There are mountains of evidence to refute the Repub (and Fox) BS, and we as democrats(and other actual News organizations) aren’t as good at the BS (inherently as dems we like facts and supportable conclusions). So we should be fighting back from the left. (or in the case of news orgs, from fact).
I agree… all polls show that Bernie Sanders will demolish Trump or Cruz…Wall Street Hillary not so much. Actually Trump has a good chance to beat Hillary. Hillary is the Establishment. Hillary is Goldman Sacks. Hillary is Wall Mart. Hillary is Monsanto. Bernie is surging in the polls and the more people get to know him and what he stands for the more desperate Hillary and her supporters get.
Bernie Sanders 2016
That’s it…RUN…when you should be fighting for your country. What kind of a person runs away from the good fight to take back the country from the Oligarchy. Support Bernie Sanders
I never said I would stay at home. I said I would vote for a third party candidate.
It’s funny how people like you seem to think that if the party nominates an extremist, then moderates who tend to vote Democratic should just suck it up and vote for someone we would never want to see as president. Sure, it’s possible (I would argue likely) that because Sanders is so extreme, it would cause the Democrats to lose. But guess who’s fault that is? Democrats who nominated Sanders in the first place. If you want to beat the GOP, then nominate someone that moderates can actually vote for. If you want to vote for the most extremely liberal person you can find, then you are going to lose the center. That’s how it works.
Everyone Loves Unicorn Farts!
Ah yes. Obama is a complete failure because, you know, the Good is always the enemy of the Perfect.
This rhetoric is almost indistinguishable from the rhetoric of Trump supporters. I guess every party has to make room for stupid people.
