Discussion: Obama: Black Lives Matter And Other Activists Need To Learn To Compromise

LBJ asked Martin Luther King to tone it down also. MLK told him no.

That’s a lesson the GOP never leaned.

Certainly a shot across the bow of the SS Bernie boat. Those folks don’t even understand what political compromise IS.

True, but MLK was by all accounts, always willing to meet, to debate even those who were against him (not that many of his opponents were willing to return the courtesy.) He didn’t compromise his principles, but he also didn’t shy away from engaging in productive dialogue. Sadly, too many activists - and not just BLM, but a whole slew of causes, it seems - have refused such engagement, in the name of purity and fealty to the revolution.

Sadly, it seems to be mirroring the same irrational, rage-dominated thought we see so often on the right. Ideologues, no matter how righteous they perceive their cause to be, never seem to realize that the opposition hold to their beliefs with equal fervor, and the day after the march, or the rally, or the election, those other people will still be there. They aren’t going to evaporate into thin air, or fold in the face of your superior position. Compromise is absolutely critical to the functioning of any liberal democratic society. The alternative ultimately leads to some very dark places… because when you realize you will never convince your opponents, and you haven’t done the hard work to convince the public at large that you are reasonable and willing to talk, what is left?

The Repug lying fools have smeared the POTUS as a radical and a socialist, but he is actually one of the most pragmatic, temperate leaders the country has ever had.

Why should they? Not compromising sure worked better for them than compromising ever worked for Obama.

Two terms of ‘steppin and fetchin’ for WS and the GOP. And he’s still telling people to compromise as it’s the only way to secure that half a loaf. What a fool.

It seems that Obama learned that the constitution is based on compromise, and damned few other politicians have.

But Repubs didn’t want to accomplish anything. They just wanted to block. So refusing to compromise worked for them. BLM wants to do more than block, yes? They want to accomplish something.

Your overt racism is always repulsive.

Flagged.

Because the alternative tactics you apparently espouse have been bringing home the full loaf for who exactly? In the history of America, what protest group has ever achieved their agenda through an unwillingness to compromise?

The president didn’t say anything controversial, but it’ll be perceived that way. I’ve been saying the same thing he’s saying here since last fall.

"Obama brought up compromise often in his speech, imploring youth
activists and political hopefuls to learn how to compromise and to not
see opponents or those on the other side of the aisle as enemies. "

Mr President ,with ALL due respect Sir,That (Compromise) is why Merrick Garland can’t get a vote ,right now anyway. That is why Judges you have nominated many months ago are still in limbo. That is why legislation you submit to congress gets so beat up.You have tried to Compromise with and unwilling partner (GOP) and the folks are looking at this in real time and I guess scratching their heads. You know,we here at TPM compromise is the way to go but you MUST have a willing partner,Sir. IMO.

There is nothing wrong with being able to converse with those who have different points of view. My best political buddy was a black Libertarian. She had no time for the Pauls. Thought they were not sincere. Personal responsibility was her mantra. We had some things in common, and on other occasions we agreed to disagree.

Being registered as an Independent she changed registration in the PA primary to vote for Obama. The day after, back to Indy. We never let our differences over-shadow our friendship. Ideas can always be shared. There is no crime in sitting down at the same table and listening.

Sadly, she’s deceased now and I miss our marathon telephone convos. She would ranting and raving about Trump.

True believers never compromise. Being uncompromising is simultaneously their greatest strength and most glaring weakness.

Sucks to be you, I guess, that your life is so empty.

Very nice how you remember your friend. Sounds like you would have had some amazing discussions in this crazy 2016 race.

OK, so let’s accept your premise that the president has been unable to get more accomplished because he was too willing to compromise. How exactly would an unwillingness to compromise put him in a better position? How would he have gotten more judges confirmed if he’d refused to compromise? How would he have gotten more legislation passed? Please do explain how this works.
