Nothing in the federal government moves fast. It will be years before NC really starts losing money. But until then, every corporation thinking of moving there, every educated worker thinking of moving there, every family interested in educating their children, will think twice.
Obama’s administration won’t withhold funds from NC, because after all the emotional whooha, they know that they are on shaky legal grounds.
Personally, I’m not happy about this. I think that Fed funding should have been withdrawn immediately; sh*t like this will continue to happen until these states realize they don’t get to screw around with people’s lives but still keep their place at the government teat.
OTOH, I’m wondering if the Administration is doing this because they thought that to withhold educational funds at this time might jepordize Clinton’s election chances.
I was so hoping that they would. How do you hurt the GOP in NC? Withhold money from their beloved UNC Tar Heels.
NO, they KNOW that unlike the Local Drama Queens in the NC GOP, they can go to court and litigate while the status quo remains in place.I think the NC legislation, which preempts the local ordinances is on shaky ground. And is the Red State soup du jour like the Tax Initiatives were in the 80s, like the anti Gay initiatives, like the State Immigration statutes at the beginning of the Obama Adminstration.
This is fair. It is being litigated.
More important, and what will drive the GOP from office is the loss of business dollars and bad publicity. This is what will cause repeal.
They will be free to impose Federal withholding for education from NC should NC continue to refuse to comply with Federal Law…it just isn’t happening right away. I suspect the Executive branch will be on even firmer ground when NC demonstrates it plans on openly defying the law and insisting they are ignoring Federal mandates. I would assume legal fines can also be imposed seperately by DoJ should the State refuse to change its ways that comport with Title 7 & 9.
“North Carolina would continue to receive federal funding for the time being.”
Red states should stop expecting government handouts for schools, highways, and farmers.
They should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.
Giving money to these people only breeds a culture of dependence.
Besides, they’d only blow it on oxycontin.
Or Duck Dynasty tchotchke.
Takers.
Au contraire, my perky little pomme de terre.
They have solid legal grounds under both Title VII and Title IX.
They’re just going to approach it from a different angle.
You continue to be intellectually underwhelming.
Wanna bet that even if NC loses in the Federal court and even the SC (although that could easily be 1+ year away) that the Gov and GOP will do all they can to subvert the court’s ruling. They may even enact a new law (son of HB2?) with enough changes to claim it’s not the same law yet have almost the same hooks in it.
Yes, they are capable of anything. I know people from NJ who moved to NC. I hope they don’t regret it.
There is also a election in the not so distant future, where the Republicans aren’t doing very hot here in NC right now.
I love that.
No drama Obama is good and it does have to work its way through the litigation as well as not being the latest outrage of the moment to fire up the Trumpeters. (I meant to write Trumpsters but I like the auto spell version just as well)
The headline here is very, very misleading.
.
You can’t see me, but I’m applauding you, as I nod my head in an “I’m impressed” context.
Agreed. The funds won’t be withheld immediately. But stay tuned. The Adminstration is just keeping its powder dry.
IOW cowards to enforce the law…what good is a law if you refuse to enforce and sanction.
What’s the schedule for the funding anyway? I would assume that most of the money for this academic year has been disbursed.
