Discussion: Obama: Abortion Debate 'Legitimate' 'Demonizing' Planned Parenthood

Discussion for article #243291

If Republicans gave a crap about life after birth, they wouldn’t be using this kind of violent rhetoric already. After all, they don’t care if babies die in dumpsters, women die hemorrhaging in the street, or men die from simple infections- so long as that zygote or fetus gets pushed out of the birth canal on time.

“fair to have a legitimate, honest debate about abortion”

This is such bullshit. The “debate” centers around whether or not Christians get to impose their religious beliefs on other people. This line of thinking is such bullshit

Obama said it was “fair to have a legitimate, honest debate about abortion” in the U.S.

No there isn’t. Mr. President, you screwed the pooch with that comment. There is no such thing as a fair and honest debate over abortion. There never has been, and there never will be. Opponents will accept nothing less than the banning of all abortions. No debate. Not now, not ever.

If they gave a crap about children, they wouldn’t cut programs that directly effect the health and welfare post-birth children.

That too. The GOP isn’t pro-Life, they’re pro-Birth. As far as they’re concerned, the post-Birth living should hurry up and die and “decrease the surplus population.”

Specifically, they want to “decrease the minority population, especially those that do not look like us”.

There’s nothing to debate. WTF is Obama implying? It’s been law for 43 years. Three people are killed by a madman driven to kill by right-wing propaganda and hatred.

There’s nothing to fucking debate Mr. President. What a cowardly thing to say.

‘Cowardly’? Oh please. The right to HAVE an abortion is settled law. However, the terms of when you can have one is not. It has changed several times in the last 43 years. I am pro-choice and HAVE been for the entire 43 years but if you think there isn’t something to ‘debate’ you are as short sighted and hard headed as the pro-lifers. Only with discussion do we change minds.

Yeah that’s it, Darcy. Declare the debate over and call the President a coward for saying people shouldn’t demonize Planned Parenthood.

It’s not even really about that - it’s about controlling women’s ability to have sex. It is not now and never has been about babies…what they really hate is Griswold - where the privacy right first appeared - because it basically said, it’s no business of the government what consenting adults do. The ability of men to control women by controlling their sex lives is the whole story.

This is all about self-loathing anti-sexxers, and nothing more. Their vilification of contraception, sex ed, abortion, and same-sex (marriage, sex, anything) all stems from the fear that some people might be enjoying their bodies, for something other than reproduction. I’m a late in life parent, and I had no idea how much like…a chore…TTC sex can become, but that helped me understand why they were OK with that kind of sex (and no other).

I’m saying why continue to debate? What is there to discuss that hasn’t been talked about ad nauseum these past decades?

It was a “cowardly” thing for the president to say. That’s my belief. Can this president ever confront the Republican and right wing hatred and propaganda machine for the killing of these three innocent Americans? Will he ever dare say they are as responsible for the killings as the madman who pulled the trigger?

“Only with discussion do we change minds.”

You sound like the president. The adult response always sounds best but let me know when you change the “minds” of these true believers.

Are you really that naive?

Oh, I figured it out. TTC sex = trying to conceive sex.

Darcy is off his meds again. He commented Good Riddance yesterday to the story that the January 2016 State of the Union address would be the last.

The ironic thing is that Cecile Richards and the head of the Colorado Springs PP said the same thing on TV and so did Wendy Davis. I agree there should be no debate, but apparently the Right Wing has made it a huge issue in this election. But for Darcy, this is just another opportunity to call the President a coward.

So you think House Democrats should boycott this select committee investigating Planned Parenthood because the debate is over? Just let Republicans call the witnesses and ask the questions most helpful to their cause without any input from Democrats?

There is a certain segment of people who are opposed to abortion and they have a right to voice that opposition. It would be a mistake to just declare the debate over and exit stage left leaving them the floor.

Yeah, they didn’t get the memo.

That is the President’s point as well as that of Cecile Richards, Wendy Davis and the woman in charge of the Colorado Springs PP. How can anyone ignore these attacks on PP like it doesn’t exist. The President is right but people like Darcy who only think bluster is the way to respond, likes to couch it as cowardly.

Then please call Cecile Richards, Wendy Davis and the head of the Colorado PP cowards. That is what each of them said yesterday and the reason is that it is obvious that this issue has become front and center in 2016 election politics like no other time. To ignore this and say fuck you, abortion is the law of the land, isn’t going to stop the terrorism.
