Discussion: NY State Senate Candidate Accuses Daily Caller Of Plans To 'Out' Her As Sexual Assault Survivor

“She gave public speeches and interviews saying she was an immigrant from Colombia when she was actually born in Florida. She also told people she had a degree from Columbia University when she did not graduate.”

Okay crazy lady it’s time to go join the Republicans cuz there’s no room for that crap in Dem party. My guess is somebody in the GOP is bankrolling this nut.

But is there really any difference between an immigrant from Colombia and one from Florida? In New York, both foreign countries.

This speaks to how difficult it is to prove sexual assault if the accuser’s credibility is poor in other areas of her life:

“If she lied about that, then she is lying about this.”

Possibly, but not necessarily.

Later Tuesday, a Wall Street Journal reporter, Shayndi Raice, tweeted that she also had a “terrible encounter with David Keyes.”

Hmm certainly lends some credibility to what Salazar is alleging. However with her claims of being an immigrant and saying she graduated when she didn’t does create a bit of doubt on what she is saying.

I have no problem with the Keyes allegation. #MeToo is tough, especially w/o a police report.
– I do have a problem if she claimed being an immigrant (as versus an immigrant experience with her parents being new to the country.
– I have a huge problem with people claiming degrees that they don’t have. Again, real quotes are needed (I went to Columbia is a fudge that is understandable, if not clear, and different from I have a degree from Columbia)

I am hopeful that this is an outlier. But is anyone vetting these candidates? Are ‘progressives’ so disdainful of the ‘establishment’ that ideology trumps truth? FSM save us.

The GOP base was pissed off and sick of the status quo and we wound up with Trump. The progressive base is pissed of as well, and while we won’t end up with a Trump type candidate, we may end up with candidates who cannot win in the general elections.

At least she hasn’t had to deny she’s a witch. Yet.

In a democracy, this is the job of the voters.

Yeah, without corroborating evidence an accusation depends on credibility, and she doesn’t have much. I have literally no idea if the assault allegations are accurate, obviously, though it’s tempting to believe them simply because David Keyes is a shitbag.

What’s just as weird to me is “what was the Daily Caller trying to do here”? I mean, her credibility was already shot, and the “no corroborating evidence” thing goes both ways. Unless they had some sort of evidence that it didn’t happen they really shouldn’t be running their mouths either…

I think that answer is a little pat. One reason parties exist is to get good candidates on the ballot. A good party has pre-primary classes for possible candidates.

A good candidate need not meet some standard of perfection, but they should be have knowledge of basic civics and finances, and be honest and not susceptible to black mail. Journalists then dig in and check out details. Hopefully they can spend time on policy positions rather than investigating stupid stuff like college degrees actually granted.

I find a lie about a degree to be a deal breaker. After that her policy positions become irrelevant.

Can a serial liar also be a victim of sexual assault? Yes. Should a serial liar be the Democratic nominee for the NY State Senate? No.

Agree, as long as she actually did a false claim and this isn’t just dirt being thrown.

I recall — I think from TPM — a photo of a female Dem candidate, with her mother, holding up her framed (phony) “degree.” I’m not sure if it was Salazar or not.

ETA: not Salazar. Apologies. Looking for the photo did lead me to a Tablet article on her. She’s certainly got an interesting history, having transitioned from conservative Christian to progressive Socialist Jew.

Florida republican running for State House. See how a bad candidate can spoil the soup for others with rumors against them.

She’s a serial liar about lots of crazy things. That doesn’t mean she can’t have been assaulted but it does mean I don’t have to believe her about this any more than I do the other nutty stuff she says.

Wow! I just started googling her and the number of lies she’s told are incredible. It’s not just being an immigrant and graduating from Columbia. She’s also lied about being lower middle class - according to her Mother and brother, her dad earned $100,000/year, they had a big house on a river in Florida, and she has a $600,000 trust fund. The messy affair with Keith Hernandez and being a Christian, Republican anti-choice activist until recently are just bonus facts. (I know Christian isn’t like the other stuff but she’s running as Jewish now and being Jewish, I find a claimed connection by a politician looking for my vote one that I examine carefully.)

On top of all that, who would call being an abuse survivor being “outed” in this current moment in democratic politics? It sounds like a fabulist trying to co-opt a desperately important movement for personal gain.

She gave public speeches and interviews saying she was an immigrant from Colombia when she was actually born in Florida.

I have no idea what the truth is behind this, but it is certainly possible to be an immigrant from Colombia and to have been born in Florida (for example, by being born in Florida, then moving to Colombia and establishing residency/citizenship there, and then moving to another country, such as the US).

Her brother and mother say she’s lying - that her dad is an immigrant from Colombia but she never lived there and they just visited Colombia occasionally to see family.
