Party died years ago. They have been zombies ever since.
I donât.
I do remember when it stood for spraying pesticides on Cesar Chavez and other farm workers for daring to fight for the right to unionize. I do believe the grape boycott and my Republican parentsâ opposition to it is one of my earliest political memories.
And yet, the GOP as Roosevelt envisioned it and governed - progressive, forward-looking, still the party of Lincoln - is dead. Taft won - the GOP we have today is the conservative monster he wanted.
Did they? The Republicans have lost more elections than they won since Bush, and âwonâ more elections with a minority of the vote than the majority. To the extent theyâve maintained power, itâs been through corruption, lies, gerrymandering, and cheating. The GOP is a dead corpse walking, at least until it finds a way to align itself with voters that wonât be dead in a generation.
Theyâre more in power now than they were after Watergate. Americans have short memories.
