Discussion: North Korea Won’t Give Up Nukes, Offers Hamburgers As A Compromise

The hamburger concession is reportedly both a nod to President Donald Trump’s love of fast food, as well as a cheeky reference to Trump’s 2016 statement about wanting to talk nuclear weapons with Kim Jong Un while “eating a hamburger on a conference table.”

trump: “I’ll trade a McD fish sandwich for 2 nukes.”

Since it’s North Korea, I wouldn’t be surprised if the newly welcomed “hamburger” franchise will end up serving Soylent Green burgers.

NOTE: Changed to clarify meaning.

If trump diplomacy continues, we’ll be the ones eating Soylent Green (I had to look that up—my TPM education started early today )

After two more months of Trump negotiations, I am sure that there will be a KFC in North Korea. That Extra Crispy Nobel Peace Prize is in the bag!

So…-

Can most of agree (sans feral Trumpers) that Rump was played by Kim Jong Un who got what he truly wanted: to be recognized as a peer on the world stage especially by S.K. and China. That’s it. And it cost him very little seeing as N.K. no longer had a base of nuclear operations anyway.

The Dotard got nothing except an offer for meat. I wonder if Mike Pompeo still thinks that crawling on his knees for the Dotard is worth it in the end.

Seems Trump administration is outwitted again…

In NK can make the US look foolish, why would any country not try and take advantage of the fool in the WH?

Trump: “Just how many burgers are we talking? If we remove our troops, could these burgers have cheese? We’re open to continuing these discussions.”

Was typing that as your comment came through.

Strangely, Wimpy and Kim Jong Un are the same shape. Seems there is a simple photoshop job away from a winning meme.

I was wondering if they were going to string Trump along for a while or humiliate him right away. Obviously we can move that question to the “answered” column. Hamburgers. Christ.

Nope. Just the ultimate 70’s science girl nerd who never watched movies, and too poor as a grad student to own a tv. I’m catching up with on our ‘cultural” history in my retirement!

This is a country so poor the people routinely eat tree bark and dirt. The nutrition is so poor, minimum height for entrance into the military was lowered to 4’10” a while back.

I’m sure Shake Shack will just thrive there.

Kim is just trolling Trump at this point. But Kim’s message and vision are clear: he intends to build NK up like China where capitalism and direct foreign investment have some room for growth but the country is under the firm grip of the central gov’t (which is him). It will be more restrictive than China as there is no pretense of consensus driven politics, but that’s his vision. I don’t think he can do it because his paranoia will get the better of him and most businesses, save a McDonalds or Shake Shack, will be scared away.

What’s important to me is that our media report the situation accurately with some understanding of what’s going. The nat sec community has been utterly abysmal in giving Trump the benefit of the doubt, when he’s just a moron messing with nuclear diplomacy. I don’t fault Moon for acting in his country’s best interests on this matter. It’s time for Americans to force their government to act in the nation’s best interest: force Trump to kill this summit; do not escalate war tensions; bide time until this GOP administration is replaced by Democrats; push denuclearization back on to the agenda and engage in an Iran nuke deal style negotiation with Moon (or his successor) leading the way as the guarantor (since our rep is shot after what Trump did to the Iran deal). We will have to rein in SK (when we have a sane gov’t again) and tell them that neither Kim nor the regime can be normalized and we need to push for denuclearization in stages with international inspectors, etc. If Kim rejects, so be it, we isolate him and run out the clock on him just as we did with Kim Sr and the old Soviet Union. Diplomacy works.

The concession of a hamburger place seems like open mockery to me.

As Trump has been referred to as “Cheeto Jesus”…

If such a deal goes down for burger joints in NK, I think you just coined a new nickname for the president.

As do most thinking people…

Which means it will go right over Trumps head.
