Um, two points

  1. they were not fake classes. they were just less rigorous than they should have been; and
  2. they were not just for athletes. they were open to the entire student body, and more non-athletes than athletes took them.

The only think I remember is when they changed the drinking age to 21 because they were threatened with the loss of highway funds. This was around '97 I think. It had been 18 to buy, 21 to drink and feds finally said no, 21 or nothing.
