Discussion for article #226057
Generally I vote for democrats. But having said that … I do not respond well to threats or ultimatums. Even if they are from someone I respect.
He ain’t wrong. We won’t win back the House. But if we did, that’d shut down impeachment, cold. I didn’t hear it as a threat or ultimatum.
If wishes were fishes, we would all be casting nets.
I think we can make some headway, but I don’t think we are quite there yet for taking back the House. 2016 is my bet for that.
If is an “interesting” story developing, however. Boehner introduces the lawsuit, and in the same breath brings up the impeachment word. And proceeds to do so every time its brought up.
And then when Democrats point that out…republicans immediately accuse Dems of using it as a political weapon.
Sahil? This word “ultimatum?” It does not mean what you seem to think it means.
In diplomacy, an “ultimatum” is threat to declare war if a demand is not met. In common parlance, an ultimatum is a threat to do a thing if a demand is not met.
This is not an “ultimatum.” It is a prediction about future actions of persons over whom he, the Democrats, or for that matter, Boehner, have no control. It may or may not be accurate, it may or not be hyperbolic and it may or may not be melodramatic. But it is not an ultimatum, nor does it contain any threat.
Not an “ultimatum,” nor is it a threat. It is merely a warning about what he thinks other people will do in the future if given the chance.
Probably not the most constructive way to go about this. The rwnj’s are more the party of hyperbolic threats than the Dems…which is a good thing IMO. Not saying he’s wrong tho…
Well, the “threat or ultimatum” inference is strickly Sahil’s doing. Basically all that Clyburn did was so the obvious…get out and vote, so the Dems can take back the House and end any notion of impeachment.
Go back and re read the article, and only pay attention to the actual quotes from Clyburn, and disregard the Sahil translation.
You beat me to it. No ultimatum here; just an “if…then” statement of possible consequences. Poor reporting.
Must not be on any fundraising lists. I quite often get “WE NEED $735 MORE DOLLARS BY MIDNIGHT OR JOHN BOENER IS GOING TO SODOMIZE A PUPPY ON LIFE TELEVISION!” emails.
That’s clearly ridiculous; everyone knows that Boehner is just not up to that effort!
It’s a lot like the “saying racism is race-baiting” nonsense.
This strategy might work with black and Native American voters; less with Hispanic and Asian voters; and not at all with women and economically disadvantaged voter who routinely vote against their best interest.
If we DID win back the house, could we pre-impeach any theoretical GOP Presidents, just in case that should ever happen?
If that’s the quality of get out the vote emails these days then I’m happy to be a Luddite.
Is the world aware that “impeachment” is simply an indictment from the House of Representatives and you need two-thirds of the Senate (67) to remove a President from office?
I don’t care what the House does, because it’s a waste of time. And even if it’s a GOP landslide in November and they end up with 52 Senators, they aren’t going to get 15 Democratic Senators to go along and remove Obama from office.
For fuck sake, this is like the New York Port Authority being worried about my secret plan to steal the Statue of Liberty and hide it in my garage.
The Republicans have ruined our most surgical tools in COngress. The filibuster, the Senate hold and impeachment are all intended for rare and careful use. But the Republicans have turned them into perennial bludgeons they use for purely partisan desperation.
Part of me says “Bring em’ on” because I know how badly the Clinton impeachment went for them and how this will hasten their permanent relegation to perpetual minority status.
But the Justice in me is outraged… incensed that a good man and President has not only faced historic obstruction that thinly veils the abiding racial prejudice that haunts us still, but that he might carry that scarlet asterisk beside his name as one of the Presidents who was impeached. He does not deserve this treatment, and it should be inspiration enough to get all the Democrats off their chairs to vote in the mid-terms.
History students of the future will look back and in retrospect they will understand that it was NOT the President who erred, but those who attempted to impeach him for partisan prejudice.
But we will still have to suffer through another circus like the one we saw with Clinton. Republicans no longer care about the real nation we live in, they want something that not only never existed, but can never exist no matter how they yearn for it.
Unfortunately, Democrats (Doormats) don’t have that much common sense. Nor do they have any real anger over this issue. It is seen as “Just another Grumpy Old Party stunt.”
Democrats fail to see what Impeachment will do to real government function . It will shut the government down, without the GOP having to pay a nickel for it. (Or in their case, restore a nickel to it.)
The GOP will Impeach Obama.
They will do it because they are both arrogant and stupid enough to think that there will be no payback. Meanwhile, Government (and media) will be horse collared and even less will get done while Impeachment consumes everyone and everything for months on end.
And Democrats don’t see this coming, nor, what is even more upsetting to me is that they are not in the least angry enough about it.
Not even Angry enough to prevent it from happening at the ballot box, before the “drama” plays out in Real Life at a cost to the entire Nation.
Here we go again, the poors are declaring Kristallnacht on the captains of industry, one more time. When, O When will they stop victimizing the very white people who could foreclose at any moment?
TPM: Boehner insists the GOP has no plans to impeach Obama.
Just like I had no plans to have sex last time I got drunk.
