Discussion: NIH Official Dismisses Fox Host's Question On Ebola As Bioterrorism

Discussion for article #228432

If you’ve never had a right wing family member who forwards you ridiculous right wing emails, you may not know that right wingers obsess over hypothetical bioterrorism scenarios. For a while they were convinced that the gays were leaving HIV-infected needles in places where innocent people might reach without looking, such as the handle on a gas pump nozzle. (I’m not exactly sure how that would even work, but that’s beside the point.)
So it’s no surprise at all to see them flipping out about Ebola. Notice too that Wallace’s question refers to a porous southern border. It doesn’t matter what the response to the question is. The goal was to associate Mexicans with disease, as they do at Fox on a daily basis. Mission accomplished on that front.

Just so typical for Fox News to employ fear tactics for ratings and political purposes. Disgusting as usual for them.

One wonders if Mr. Fauci felt he needed a hazmat shower after leaving the building.

Not only that but the natural pre-existing ignorance and knuckledragging dumbassness of Republicans and conservatives in general.

Josh is dealing with some real doozies on his twitter feed the past 24hr. Highly entertaining. Luckily the Drudge/Fox morons will be having very little effect on the outcome in this case.

Why? Because we have real leadership and competence at the top, unlike the Reagan years when dumbfucks like Ronald Reagan failed to take immediate action and allowed HIV infection to spread rampantly for the first 10 years of the epidemic, and the Bush years when NONE of his administration was capable of dealing with any kind of emergency.

It seems they’re constantly trying to hammer together Rube Goldbergian scenarios you could collectively title “Liberals Will Literally Get You Killed!!!” If we were still talking here in the East about rabid raccoons, like we were 20 years ago, they’d throw that in the mix somehow I’m sure. It makes you wish common sense were more, you know, common.

FOX exists to stir fear. It’s a price we pay for freedom of speech. But crying fire in a crowded theater is illegal, and punishable.

"“What are the chances that illegal immigrants are going to come over
our porous southern border with Ebola or that terrorists will purposely
send someone here using Ebola as a bioterror weapon?” Wallace asked.

Fauci said that both scenarios were incredibly unlikely."

I bet the good Doctor in his mind was saying is this guy that stupid to think such a thing ?

IMHO,Doc he’s not but his audience is.

This is part of the right’s GOTV strategy for next month’s election, folks: Terrorize the populace so they’ll turn out and vote for the national-security party, not wimpy terrorist-lovin’ Democrats.

It doesn’t matter how many “scientists” and other pointy-headed types refute the nonsense; the point is to keep asking the question so low-information voters keep hearing it asked and keep having nightmares.

Why didn’t Wallace bring up the fact that Ebola originates in Africa and Benghazi is in Africa so Ebola must be Obama’s fault?

Slo-ow up there. The bar for suppressing speech is high for some very good reasons.

I have a good friend who lives in a small right wing town outside of Dallas who gets all the forwarded email from the crazies around her about the latest Muslim/Kenyan plots originating in the WH. She fully expects to get one before long linking Ebola to the president. But I’m glad a D-O-C-T-O-R had a chance to shoot down a talking head. Maybe Governor Ricky should come back from fundraising in Iowa to oversee matters in Texas. Nah. That’d be too sensible.

Yeah, Chris Wallace, illegal immigrants from Latin America have been jetting around the world picking up germs before they come here. In fact, it is well known that impoverished Latinos often like to go on African safari adventures as sort of a “last hurrah” before making the big move to the US.
Then they somehow manage to avoid succumbing to ebola during their weeks long trek to the border, saving it up for the gringos.
Stooge.

Christ Wallace?! Well, I know he thinks highly of himself, but that’s a bit over the top, TPM.

Risk is risk, but there is also proportionality. Virtually all of the ebola problem, or crisis, is one of public health. The initial WHO funding that would have had at least the warning infrastructure on the ground so that this made it onto the global public health radar, was something that has been consistently opposed by the GOP. This in itself is odd, as a crisis on the scale of the Spanish Flu pandemic would cost 2 % of global GDP, or $1.6 trillion in current terms. As it is the costs of ebola have been rising about 10-fold per month of inattention. Now it’s a billion to put the genie back in the bottle, next month it’s $10 billion. Indeed, the GOP-dominated House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations had all the ammo it needed to call for a full-throated response as of August 7, yet has still done nothing. Obama moved only after getting Tom Freiden’s eye-witness field report on August 31, i.e. a full infection cycle later. Really, the lackadaisical response to this, quite different from say H1N1, is what should be stoking right-wing indignity. Instead, they seem unable to figure out what exactly it is they should be afraid of. Lizard people.

well, considering obama is from kenya, you might have a point there…

Headline seems to imply the host’s question itself was bioterrorism.

Soon on FOX News: “Breaking News: FOX News, as always providing a very thoughtful, science-based approach to our nation’s problems, has reached out to its most reliable undercover reporter, Alex Jones, and has found out he has uncovered undeniable proof that Ebola is the just latest part of the Kenyan Usurper Obummer’s master plan to kill all of the Christians in America and create an army of zombies. Next will come the black helicopters to move any survivors to the FEMA camps for forced gay interracial marriages and abortions!”

(You know?..That’s actually not over the top for FUX News!)
