I always crack up when Kevin McCarthy is quoted.

The objectives of "real tax reform crafted in a fiscally responsible manner” and “get legislation out of the House and Senate before Thanksgiving” do not intersect in the real world. But then, the article is about the GOP tax plan which is uninhibited by real world concerns.

Their bill would leave the prized mortgage interest deduction untouched for homeowners in a concession to the powerful real estate lobby

So, when they do manage something that might help the middle class, it’s accidental?

Notice it is not a concession to TAXPAYERS. It is a concession to a powerful donor and business group. That’s who the Republicans view as their constituents.

“…but would ignore a House compromise on the hot-button issue of state and
local tax deductions.”

Because no donors or business interests are affected. Only TAXPAYERS with no organization behind them.

My guess is that they will pass some kind of tax cut – the intra-party pressure to do so is enormous – but what actually passes will be far less sweeping than either the House or Senate bill. A lot of stuff is going to have to get jettisoned to pass it, particularly in the Senate.

Taxpayers and states with political folks that create state taxes to do government stuff with, i.e. Democats.

Taxing churches should be the FIRST item of the so-called tax reform effort.

It’s going to be a difficult needle to thread, because if the bill isn’t sweeping enough and doesn’t give enough to donors, then the ones who are only doing it for the campaign contributions may not go along. A lot like the ACA debacle. (I hope)

Especially these days when many are more like recreation centers you can write off on your taxes.

If he jerks their tax exempt status I will have to admit that he has done one thing I really approve of.

I’m sure the GOP would gleefully come after mosques, synagogues, and temples.

But churches are sacred.

But churches are scared. If most churches actually had to pay only the property taxes normal folks have to pay, they’d collapse like a house of cards.

I would love to hear some of the phone calls coming into McConnell and Ryan right now from their ultra rich donors. God what I wouldn’t give for a few recordings.

In the meantime, the Republicans have been saying out loud that their donors are demanding a tax cut or they are going to quit donating. These comments need to be spliced into an ad and run periodically across the country - they are absolutely damning. I have never seen that kind of flat out admission about who is setting Republican policy before, and it needs to be hammered down the same way Clinton’s email server was and Benghazi.
