Like everything else on the right, they have no understanding or empathy, because they don’t know anyone in whatever situation they are railing against. Only when their new son-in-law gets deported will they maybe see the light. Can I also say here what a horrid piece of shite Mulvaney is? I get as nauseous seeing his face as I do seeing or hearing his orange pustule of a boss.
You have to possess some basic human decency and compassion. Many of these people are sadly lacking. Trump is sadly lacking.
The very definition of pigs at the trough…no morals, scruples, self respect decency…they are fucking zombies.
Yeah, you know that because you trust websites like Talking Points Memo and mainstream news to tell you the truth. But what if all the sites you trusted told you that DACA was welfare for immigrants and we couldn’t stop them? And if TPM had stories every day about how scary they were and trying to kill us. How would you know the truth?
That’s why I was polite to her and explained the truth to her, while the only other person who commented just trolled her with insults against Trump. I don’t have a clue if she believed me, but insults are always counterproductive. Republicans WANT us to insult them as racist deplorables, so they won’t listen to a thing we say. They say this outright, yet we only mock them for it.
I applaud your patience and efforts, but my experience with these folks is that they will never leave FOX for a truth-telling news source. They are so sure that Hannity is right. This is the base. It will always be there.
Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, the GOP now has fodder for their campaign ads with this shutdown. I’m starting to get nervous that it’s not going to end well for the Democrats. The GOP has every media tool in their favor and Schumer is just not as visible nor vocal as he should be. McConnell said “no” to paying the military? I barely see that story anywhere…
One thing I am noticing is over the last month, the process of the Republicans has become cruder and blunt. It feels like their bag of finesse is used up. Hell Nunes likely scrawled his memo in crayon at this point.
By appearances, these unsophisticated attacks along with lying, deflecting and obfuscating, they act like they are fighting for their lives. That is not to imply false hope, it is something I keep feeling as I watch them.
It may play to their base, possibly smaller than before, but it is not a functional tact in the long term again. Mueller is spooking the hell out of them. As time has gone by, more information is out there. The Russian and Criminal connections keep expanding in visibility.
The Democrats put a torpedo in their bow last night. Keep it up. The Republicans will play it up with their sense of victimization, but they will not convince anyone to move to their side of the house that has not already. The base is finite and possibly dwindling.
I think they are totally screwed at this point. The problem is how quickly we get rid of them to reduce the damage they generate. Since the people clinging to Trump seem to do so with no logic or reasoning, I still have to presume they are zealots, compromised or criminals. Not a good base to go forward with.
Basic human decency. If she had any, she wouldn’t write what she does. That’s all it takes!
Good luck though. Let us know if you break through.
More people, btw, chose the other candidate, and Trump is bleeding support.
Disagree. I never write off anyone and consider it a challenge the crazier they are. There is a certain type of rightwing troll who shows up hurling insults and the only thing they’ll respect are insults in return. That’s always fun because I’m so much better at insults than they are and can hit them where it hurts. But in any other case, I always treat everyone as if they’re rational but uninformed and do my best to convince them.
But just so you know, almost nobody will admit they’re wrong in the heat of a debate, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t change their minds. It’s not about winning the debate, but planting seeds of doubt in the people they trust. It’s a longterm strategy and I’ve seen it work.
And where are OUR ads? Is someone - anyone - making ads? There’s certainly a lot of grist for the mill.
It won’t work with most, because of the subject of this post and the lies oozing out of the DoJ.
We don’t need those people anyway. They have to suffer personally to have it be a game changer.
Actually, yes. It does.
In her mind, immigrants are taking advantage of our decency and forcing us to support them. How can she know any better when the only people who know the truth insult her constantly and won’t even try to explain anything to her?
But she didn’t insult anyone or even mention race whatsoever. She seemed like a nice enough person and really wanted me to know the truth about what’s going on. She also blamed “Congress” for the shutdown and acted like Trump’s an innocent bystander. She didn’t make this up because she’s a bad person. She’s just repeating what the people she trusts say.
Indeed. This is a mind that’s a product of years and years of brainwashing. No one, even one with a biobrain, is going to swoop in and suddenly change her mind. It might help if she were introduced to some of the DACA people, but it wouldn’t convince her that they all should stay, even moreso because this was done as a result of an EO by Obama, because republicans refused to address it.
Is this woman a republican? She’s part of the problem.
You could tell her that since the U.S. population is about 330 million people, it would not be mathematically possible to have 900 million immigrants on welfare so that’s Fake News. I hope people like her still can understand 900>300 but maybe they are so brainwashed even that doesn’t register.
Ah, yes, the ghost of Willie Horton walks again, loosed on the land by the latest zombie-masters of the post-Southern Strategy GOP. Decades of this, guys, and no bottom in sight. Praying for some very powerful mid-term backlash of reason prevailing, though.
Without disagreeing with anything you’re saying, I’d persist in asking whether it’s an efficient use of your time as, for example, a door-to-door canvasser, to whittle away at someone when you could move on to people more persuadable. I can hurl myself into presumably lost causes as readily as the next person, but if you want to get the maximum number of votes it becomes a question of where to put your time.
She understood that. Her point was that we can’t afford welfare already, so these people are going to swamp us. That’s why we needed to undo DACA and fix our immigration laws. But I didn’t have time to comment on most of this, because she only wrote three comments and most of it was in one long rambling post. The best I did on DACA was to tell her that these people have jobs, which is why tech companies like Apple and Facebook want to keep them. These are provable things and not opinion, so I was hoping she’d follow up. But she never wrote back.
But I hopefully DID get through to her. Her main point was about the shutdown and how it hurts our soldiers, so I posted her a link to a story about how Obama signed a bill in 2013 to pay the soldiers during the shutdown. And how the only reason Republicans wouldn’t do that now is because they’re holding them hostage. I don’t know if she saw that, but it’s indisputable fact and not something she could possibly deny. That’s what I’m all about.
Door to door is useless. How can you post links disproving their point or ask them for proof of their points while you’re standing at their door? But I’ll debate anyone anytime and the only debate I ever ended was because I didn’t see the reply. I like being challenged and want people to force me to prove my points.
I once worked door to door for Obama in 2008 to remind people to vote. They only sent us to Obama doors and nobody else. That’s how that should work. You’re not likely to persuade anyone while you’re talking to them. It’s almost impossible.
