Discussion: New Republic Publisher Resigns Amid Misconduct Inquiry

On one hand, this is shocking. On the other hand, having spent my life as a woman, it’s really not shocking at all.

Having spent my life as a man, it’s not shocking at all either.

Try to keep in mind, folks, that most of us aren’t like these fuckers.

so much for the Fish dynasty

Will our society learn from this or will the pseudo-conservatives claim we’re taking away their guns and or their penises? Perhaps both.

so much for the Fish dynasty

They got schooled.

Misconduct they say. Pervert, creep, sexual predator and womanizing pig says his victims.

So far, its pretty much all the white men bosses and big wigs doing all the raping, grabbing and misconducting excluding Cosby of course whom got out in front of the pack and slithered away before the deluge.
My point is, the clear pattern is unmistakable. Its likie warning your children not to talk to strangers except its young adults and their powerful bosses.

I agree, and i’m not a woman. What’s shocking to me is the number of allegations and admissions to sexual harassment over the past few years, picking up steam all the time, among this nation’s rich, famous and powerful men. It’s almost as if harassing female co-workers is a key ingredient to success in a wide number of industries.

A much too late cleansing.

Disgusting, as always, but one can hardly still be shocked at behavior that’s the way it’s always been from one’s childhood.

Tracks with the use of Viagra.

Yes, but it’s happening. I’m not sure if it will hold. The abusers need to rethink and change, but since some won’t, those who are abused need a game plan.

God I love this comment to pieces.

Well this doesn’t depend on the abusers changing so much as it depends on the women continuing to speak out and refuse to put up with it.

That’s what is causing this - the women. Eventually the men who cannot behave like adults will be winnowed out - fired, etc.

No, I mean women need to think about what the plan is when a dumbass (and I realize they’re caught offguard in many cases, but still) whips it out or grabs them or does anything that’s not appropriate.

Women need to be proactive. I’m thinking steel-toed boots or boxing lessons or whatever it takes.

Because you and I know it’s not going to change any time soon.

It actually seems to be. I’ve encountered it without fail in several quite different industries – banking, insurance, IT, mental health. It takes only a miniscule bit of “power” and IMO a good percentage of men will behave in these ways as if they were quite entitled; the higher one goes the more it seems to happen. It also happens a good bit with men who, though at the same “power” level, are noticeably larger, stronger, heavier. Intimidation of whatever kind works, and a lot of men seem to get addicted to it.

It also seems to be a key ingredient to success with many if not most women who advance to high corporate levels. When I was pounding from beneath on the glass ceiling at my corporation (large national bank), I finally was informed almost point blank that the only way the male power contingent was going to let me move upward was if I developed round heels. And these managers/executives liked and respected me, for all the good that did. I didn’t go that route, and paid the ultimate price.

I guess what I’m saying is that there’s a co-dependency of sorts that’s endemic in many if not most large organizations. Women stay in it because the men can and do block any other path, and intimidate the women into tolerating it, filtering out those who refuse (and who thereby damage their careers). It’s going to take more than rape-shaming or even imprisoning a handful of powerful men to change that pattern, much as I enjoy seeing some of these creeps get their well earned comeuppance. And women have to find not just their voice but their power to push back successfully.
