Discussion: New GOP Immigration Bill Would Bar Family Separation, Protect DREAMers

Based on this summary (about which I have my doubts as to its accuracy), Iā€™m doubtful a majority of GOPers will support this. I donā€™t think the WH will support it. Itā€™s actually more to the left than their prior proposals. Sessions and Trump want to deport Dreamers. They like separating kids from their families. Theyā€™re fascists. Their main goal is not the undocumented immigrants, but training up people to be able to harass naturalized citizens and POC citizens. This bill, as described, would take those tools away from them.

The amount being offered for border security is no different than what was offered before, and a lot less than the Gang of 8 bill provided a few years back.

I donā€™t know if people are getting the summaries of the bill correct, because I am expecting more Stephen Miller like poison pills. Then again, the Koch Bros are dead set against immigration limits. They want comprehensive reform, so they may have gotten to some of the GOPers.

I want Pelosi to vet this, but this doesnā€™t sound like something Trump would support.

ā€œ$25 billion for border security measures including funding for Trumpā€™s long-demanded border wall.ā€

I thought Mexicans paid in pesos, not dollars.

Weird.

The only poison pill I see here is the limitation of family sponsorship. Businesses wonā€™t like it because it will limit access to top talent. Theyā€™ll just go to Canada.

It is also rumored to include a unicorn in every potā€¦

Clean DREAM Act or pound sand.

I am in favor of literally anything that will put these families back together and right now - not later.

I am too, but you can bet that ICE will ignore that provision and fight it in court indefinitely.

This may not even make it out of the House.

I think the only reason they went this far toward a reasonable bill was the family separation issue. I think they are afraid that will turn a lot of voters against them, as it should! If I were in congress I would consider voting for this. We need to help the Dreamers, and stop this outrageous separation policy. As long as the Dreamers are given a path to citizenship, I would be willing to fund the useless wall. Sessions will be against this but I think Trump will sign it. Not that I have ever been able to predict what Trump will doā€¦

It may not - but Iā€™m fine with their trying it.

Now why would Donnieā€™s IceStormTroopers do that? /s

They could pass a bill barring family separation in an hour and a half. Real politicians put together compromises, but the GOP loads bills with poison pills.

They are running scared. They see how this separation of babies/children from the parents is being received and it is not good for them. With Sessionsā€™ giggling presser ringing in our ears the GOP is rightfully terrified. Trying to say ā€œthe bible says itā€™s OKā€ isnā€™t going over well. Reap what you sow you damn fascists.

trump and the freedom wanks wont go along with a clean DACA bill and the right leaning wont go for a path @ all but want full funding of the wallā€¦

Right back in trumps lap b/c he started this whole shit storm by extorting DACA for wall funding and failingā€¦

If the Republican leadership fails to pass this bill the moderates are doomed and with them their Republican majority. It is unlikely they will even whip it.

They never can just do what is right. There always is a catch. And I know thatā€™s ā€˜compromise,ā€™ but where was the compromise when they pulled a feeding baby off her motherā€™s breast?

The outrage is building. It is on every station and it is ugly. If the Republican congress wants anything but a blood bath in Nov they should pass a clean bill and fast.
