Trump is uniting Americans to get out the vote.

On the contrary, there have been times like this, countries needing imaginary enemies to justify hate.

WW2, McCarthyism, Crusades, Immigration hysteria.

We just refuse to learn from the madness.

The more Trump talks the more disgusting he becomes.

What an excellently written article. Real in-depth journalism. This article easily could have–and should have!–been in the NY Times or WaPo, both of which I subscribe to. Kudos to Ms. Fox and to Josh. This high quality of writing is part of the reason I’m a Prime member.

“We just refuse to learn from the madness.” Nor do the media. It was the media that played a huge part in the successful downfall of McCarthy. This time around the media has bent over backwards to give Trump a soapbox to spew racism while failing to confront him about it directly.

The media has nothing to with it. What “media” are you speaking of? There are so many kinds today.

This article should be read more widely. It is a well written piece. Josh, please get this into the mainstream…well worth the effort.

Actually, it was one man, Edward R. Murrow, who played the major role in the successful downfall of McCarthy. The rest of the media, including his own CBS, more or less stood back and watched.

I know the GOP are seeing these instances just as we are,and I know they are shaking in their boots. No matter how the media is trying to spin this race as being " CLOSE".

The truth is the Republican Party has a problem with all of religion.

For all the bantering by evangelical scam artists, Republicans are not thrilled by statements of any religious leader urging tolerance. Start with the pope, Episcopals, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Jews, now Muslims.

Who the hell don’t they have a problem with?

It was Murrow, but it was at least as much Fred Friendly, his longtime producer. And the executives at CBS who had the courage–and it took courage–to let Murrow go on the air.

Unfortunately, bigotry is a constant in the US (and around the world). This year, it has become more prominent, partly due to Donald Trump. Fortunately, his scattershot prejudices are uniting Muslims, Jews, Hispanic, African-American, and liberal voters–along with those who are just sensible and reasonable–to oppose him.

And oppose Trump we must. Every person who does not CAST A VOTE against Trump is for Trump.

Every single one.

Jeez, I’ve been wondering when those that Trump targets were going to stand up and fight back.
Besides Latinos, Blacks, Gays, Asians, Women in general, Handicapped people and anyone with above basic smarts, Trump is really knocking it dead.

Trump has the neo-bigot vote in his pocket and also the old white power sector of America, then there’s umm, ummmmmm? I’ll get back to you on that.

Democrats who want to prevent a “President” Trump from packing the SCOTUS with clones of Scalia, savaging our trade agreements and stoking division in our republic and ensuring the destabilization of the planet had better get their own analytical brains in gear. “Take our country back” is not just a slogan, it is a growing malignancy that threatens to make the Tea Party look like a little temper tantrum, and Trump seems to be tailoring his campaign to exploit it. Trump has made big gains among less educated white voters. He has adopted a platform to do it and his presence is a danger not to be discounted and dismissed an “unelectable.” Ignorance, fear, bigotry and hate work very well for Republicans; they count on those qualities to continue their existence. Sadly, there is a great supply on hand from which they draw, and Hair Furor is remarkably good at exploiting it.
VOTE in November and make sure that the disease called “Trump” is sent into oblivion.

Aziz Ansari and the stigmatizing of millions of innocent law-abiding citizens aside, Islam, with the world’s highest fertility rate globally, chafes at the value systems of non-Muslims who have embraced modernity. Ironically, the fertility rates of Muslims, when looked at on a country-by-country basis, are all over the map. Tunisia might as well be a European country, with a fertility rate of 2.1 that is on par with the US. Pakistan’s baby boom, given a population approaching 200 million and a fertility rate of 3.65, defies explanation. Saudi Arabia, the role model, I guess, has seen a huge drop in its fertility rate over the past 40 years, but it still is 2.85.

Basically, economic advancement creates a covenant with the rest of society to plan family size a bit better. The US Supreme Court has never said that the fundamental right to procreate attenuates, but the global model seems to follow a curve from advanced, high-income countries with low birth rates, to low-income not-so-advanced countries with kind-of-high-but-falling birth rates to basket-case states with abject poverty and sky-high birth rates (plus infant mortality, starvation, etc.). It is a well-known model, and the idea, at least at the UN and the World Bank, is that world population should push the poor into at least the middle-income category as in China (fertility rate 1.55), and stabilize population growth.

But with three wives and five children, how are Muslims, particularly US Muslims, supposed to take Donald Trump as a role model for modern values?

Media covered it like they cover Trump today. When the tides changed, the media covered that too. The media did not actively assist in removing McCarthy.

I wasnt around for McCarthy, but my impression is that like now, the Media that there was, gleefully broadcast his accusations and communist witch hunting first, and asked questions later. I wasnt around for Father Coughlin, but in a country that during his time still slurred Irish and Italian Catholics, that Irish Catholic Priest became his era’s anti-immigrant demagogue by the power of the Radio. Ronald Reagan was mythologized by a fawning, largely uncritical Media, as soon as he became President as “the Great Communicator” because he could read his speechwriters’ platitudes on the TV. During the re-mobilization of the WJC era " GOP base" mob to oppose President Obama and everything he said or set out to do, the media bought into the Right wing accusation that it lacked balance, and thus bent over backwards to enable and gave uncritical equal time to every crack pot spokesperson for the so called “Tea Party.” The Media writ large was for the Vietnam War. It propounded the Domino Theory orthodoxy and criticized the student protesters as communist stooges and draft dodging cowards before it finally joined the increasingly large segment of the population against the War. The “Media” in this country has never been at the forefront of stopping people like McCarthy. The US Media has mostly been weather vane bandwagoner. On Civil Rights and every other issue…
