Discussion: NC Republicans: HB2 Backlash Was Just Attempt By Dems To Win Guv Race!

"Today Roy Cooper and Jennifer Roberts proved what we said was the case all along: their efforts to force men into women’s bathrooms and shower facilities was a political stunt to drive out-of-state money into the governor’s race.

Well, why not? It’s where Republican males have always wanted to be after all… :unamused:

Not a chance in the world that HB2 was blatantly political, to begin with is there?

NC + Republican = Assholes. Always has, always will.

They can tell themselves soothing stories all they want. They can deny the economic backlash to their efforts long before the elections. Whatever helps them sleep at night. But in the long run, the flight from reality has a way to create its own backlash. Stay befuddled in your fantasies.

Oh HORSEPUCKY. What a bunch of whiney aholes. The LAW was bad, you snuck it in, you looked like jerks at best and bigots at worse, the Dems launched an effective campaign against you and although they couldn’t do anything about your nasty gerrymandering of the districts or your attempts at voter fraud, they beat your ass in the Guv’s race.

You guys shouldn’t have picked a stupid hill to die on then. All you’ll be remembered as are transphobes who history will mock for all eternity.

That asshat, Dallas Woodhouse, just wished Ali Velshi a " Merry Christmass " .

Velshi is an Ismali Muslim. ( Shia )

Duh

What do you call “tone deaf” times 1,000?

Thankfully, like dinosaurs, they will eventually become extinct. And it can’t happen soon enough.

In the meantime …

(And then worker harder to elect Democrats everywhere in 2018 and 2020 and forever.)

I’m not sure this is truly a victory. Charlotte has had to repeal its ordinance to get this. The reasons for passing the ordinance in the first place have not gone away.

None of the trans people i know are in support of this newest move.

If, as a followup, a number of NC municipalities pass ordinances similar or identical to the one Charlotte just repealed, and their allowed to stand, then we will have won something. At least one major newspaper is reporting the the lege will be back to overrule Charlotte again next year should they attempt to enact protections for transgender people.

And who knows what else will come up if those clowns have to come back to Raleigh during Christmas week.

I’d be curious to hear from any North Carolinians as to what plans the NC Dem Party has to take back the state legislative body in the coming elections (or at least eliminate the GOP supermajority). NC strikes me as a state that is about to turn blue but the GOP is fighting tooth and nail to keep it red for as long as possible.

I visited NC once. I will say I got damned tired of being forced to go into women’s restrooms all the time. I thought if I wore a plaid shirt everyone would leave me alone but that seemed to make it worse.

There will be a special legislative election in 2017 using newly drawn districts to replace the ones that the court threw out last year. 28 districts in both bodies of the NCGA are unconstitutional; at this point it’s not known how many districts will end up being redrawn, but it’s certainly going to be more than 28. I know that candidates are being recruited and those Dems who are left in the legislature are good and committed people.

I think the best that can be hoped for is picking up a few seats in at least one chamber to support Cooper’s veto power.

Off year elections are generally even worse than mid-term elections as far as turnout goes, especially for Democrats. The upside of that is that it only takes a few percentage points of increase to make a difference.

If Democrats can create a unified message, and if they can agree to run on that message, i’m hopeful that they can pick up the seats they need to block the worst excesses of the Republicans. But i thought that this past election, so obviously i’m not real good at the prognosticating bit.

Cooper’s going to have to start demonstrating that he has real leadership qualities, rather than being a skilled compromiser, in my opinion. I have much less hope of that happening.

Well, obviously if the state legislature repeals HB2, that’s a good thing. But since the price of that repeal is Charlotte repealing its LBGT protections, it’s a bittersweet “victory” at best.

I guess the best-case scenario is once the new Democratic governor is in office, Charlotte and other municipalities might be able to pass new LBGT protections, and if the legislature tries to overrule them with another BH2 type law, at least the new Democratic governor can veto it. But I have no idea whether the legislature would have the votes to override such a veto. Perhaps someone more familiar with NC politics care can shed some light on that…

The legislature has more than enough votes to override anything Cooper might veto, at least until the 2017 special legislative elections are concluded.
