Discussion: Murphy: Universal Background Checks Should Be Gun Control's 'North Star'

“I think one of the traps that the gun lobby wants you to get into is being able to only talk about a legislative intervention that would have addressed the last mass shooting,” he added. “On that day that that shooter turned those guns on civilians in Las Vegas, 80 people died in other parts of the country. Many of those deaths could have been prevented by background checks.”

Well played, senator. Takes the wind out - in advance - of the … “back ground checks wouldn’t have stopped Las Vegas mad man/shooter.” Hope others pick up and repeat this approach.

GOP: Why shouldnt people of all color and nationalities be able to buy any gun in Amerika. Everybody loves us for our freedom. We even treat the terrorists the same way. They can buy any gun they want.

I should think so. Just encountered a weird man with a big rolling bag in the parking lot of a suburban FedEx. He kept asking “Do you know how many murders have been committed in this town? My girlfriend was murdered the night I had a date with her. My brother’s whole family was murdered.” I don’t really want to KNOW for sure what was in his big bag; we hightailed it out of there.

I really think gun ownership and use ought to be very similar legally to car ownership and responsibility, with licencing, registration, renewal, insurance and ability for the right to own or operate being something that can be taken away if the person breaks enough laws.

Edit: a long these lines

Murphy is among my top choices for '20. Brown, Harris, Murphy, Gillibrand, Booker, Bullock, Cuomo.

Banning bump stocks is almost meaningless.

Universal background checks should be a minimum. It makes sense, and a large majority of Americans–even Republicans–are in favor.

I have attended a few “Gun shows” - each one required a back ground check be done before you take possession of even rifles and shotguns. What states don’t require them ? I don’t understand why they keep saying that ?
I think what they actually want banned is “private party” gun sales. Like if I inherit or own fire arms - then I would have to sell them to a dealer or have the person who wanted to buy them go and get a background check done first. I wish they would be more honest woth their wording.
Ban “Bump stocks” or any other attachment or alteration that turns a semi into and full auto - agreed.

When ever someone sight things like “80 other people died in America-many could have been prevented by background checks” - they obviously are guessing without facts ! Then if you ask them, “How do you know back ground checks would have saved their lives” ? - That person will say - , :Well, if it saved just one life it would be worth it" - how do you know those 80 were killed by people without background checks and how do you know there was any connection between their deaths and the lack of a back ground check?

No Cuomo.

Yeah,if you meet someone that’s had a lot of folks around them die from gun shot, run!

Welcome to the comment section of TPM.

Improve your English, Bucky. The word you’re looking for is “cites” not “sight”.

Here’s your number 80.

The details are available there if you care to look. Here are the details on one.

Now, opinions will vary, but I think this one might qualify as killings an effective background check might have stopped.

You see, Bucky, Senators have people working for them called “aides”. They can be assigned to research websites like the gun violence archive to tally how many deaths there were on 1 October not in Las Vegas. They can also be tasked to read the background stories and get the police reports.

If you pulled out some numbers without sourcing I’d wonder. When a US Senator does, you contact his (or her) staff.

Thirty-two states do not have requirements beyond the Federal requirements. Exercise your Google-fu and you too can know the 19 political entities in the US that have some restrictions beyond the Federal statutes.

God bless this guy.

Regarding Steve Scalise:

arms
ärmz/Submit
noun
1.
weapons and ammunition; armaments.
“they were subjugated by force of arms”
synonyms: weapons, weaponry, firearms, guns, ordnance, artillery, armaments, munitions, matériel.

“Look, the Second Amendment really predates the Bill of Rights,” Scalise replied. “It is a long history in our country to make sure that you protect the right of citizens to bear arms.”

***“But is it unlimited?” Todd pressed.***

***“It is,” Scalise replied.***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arms and armaments are interchangeable linguistically speaking. One means the other, and vice versa. Scalise is saying individual citizens should be allowed to own a nuclear weapon. If you were to confront him with this proposition he would undoubtedly say he wasn't, thus placing a limit on a citizen's right to own arms (armaments), negating his original contention.
I'll take him at his word. Citizens should be able to possess nuclear weapons.
Cuomo is a corrupt horrible human being who governs like a Republican.
Ya Murphy Gilliband
how do you know those 80 were killed by people without background checks and how do you know there was any connection between their deaths and the lack of a back ground check?
Plus missing the fact that a law that sets a red flag for multiple gun sales across many states has been disabled
They have always been against simple registration, restricting it to “paper” that makes searching virtually impossible and making it easy for mentally unstable people to amass an armory.
Sorry the argument this or that won’t work has been empirically proved in other countries to work
And don’t get me started about rescinding the law that crazy people can buy guns . You’re probably OK with that Rimshot because freedom
