Discussion for article #223490
Not the type of people that surrender and retreat?
The Union army would beg to differ.
Normally Iād be upbeat at this kind of news, but in Mississippi they could run a cardboard cutout labelled āGOPā and the cutout would win the general.
āThis is a historic moment in this stateās history.ā Yeah, 2 conservative white guys in a run-off is just SO historic.
I think Cochran is toast but I give the Democrat a chance in this race if McDaniel wins the runoff. Not an odds on favorite chance but a possibility.
U.S. Senate - GOP Primary
1823 of 1832 Precincts Reporting - 99%
Max Runoff Cands=2
Name Party Votes Vote %
McDaniel, Chris GOP 151,842 50%
Cochran, Thad (i) GOP 149,714 49%
Carey, Thomas GOP 4,749 2%
Thad Cochran lost by over 2000 votes in an off-year primary. He should step aside for the good of Mississippians.
This feels like Alien vs. Predator: Whoever wins, we lose.
I have to feel a run off is going to favor Cochran more than McDaniels at this point. McDaniels is just starting to downward spiral related to the breaking in and photoing incident. 3 weeks for that investigation to gather momentum and few more names in his campaign to come floating out, and he may be the one who is going to be toast.
With respect, I donāt think so. This is MS, and there have been at least 3 āscandalsā which in a saner place would have taken McD downāand they didnāt. Runoffs tend to favor the challengerāthose who voted Cochrane are less likely to come out again to vote for an incumbent, whereas the Tea-Billy insurgents will feel energized and empowered. I think Cochrane is toast.
Again TPM, thanks for including a quote in this story from a high-ranking democrat.
I wonder if thereās going to be more arrests ā and I bet McDaniel is wondering, too.
I shouldnāt be surprised, but the MS Secretary of State hasnāt posted results yet - can you tell us where the yet-to-be reported precincts are?
Not in THEIR version. In THEIR version they are just on an extended halftime.
Nope. The breakin is the action of a True Believer defending the True Way. Anything is acceptable.
If all things stay the same, I would agree with you. But the likelihood that something more is going to break on this investigation during the next three weeks is pretty high. Donāt get me wrong, I would prefer McDaniels in the general, and a McDaniels under criminal investigation while he has staffers sitting in jail is probably the best chance the Dems have of stealing that seat.
What is this based on? What makes you think anything connected to McDaniel is going to break in the next few weeks?
Agreed on that. if the scandal was going to take McD down, it already would have. Whether Cochranās people were too inept to make something out of the scandal OR if the MS GOP base tacitly sanctions this sort of vile behavior, the fact is McD is the beneficiary.
Also, it seems to me that given the totals of voters, McD is going to have to get at least some of Cochranās voters on board if heās going to win over Childers. That remains to be seen. Dems might be able to pull this one off yet.
OK, quick search shows Rankin County (law enforcement training, and prison - great territory for the disaffected āthings are going to hellā types - McDaniels picks up another 100 votes.) Jefferson County - one of the poorest counties in the country, and the highest percentage of African Americans of any county in the US. Open primary system, some devious minds, and McDaniels gets another 50 or 75 votes. Hinds County - Cochran is holding a huge lead - McD might pick up a few of the remaining votes, but Cochran will just widen his lead.
Even after my masterful breakdown and predictions, itās still going to be a 49.6 / 48.8 race. Iād like some butter on my popcorn.
I live in Rankin. When I moved here, had I known how redneck racist it is, I would have chose Madison (if I could afford it) or Hinds.
Oh good lord! This place is toxic - it is as though - if McDaniel can get his unconnected (cough-cough) cretins to post nude pictures of Cochranās Alzheimerās stricken wife - McDaniel would win by a landslide ā¦
